Batter using Yorkshire pudding mix

My husband is vegan and also gluten free I'm really wanting to make sweet and sour this weekend. I just use quorn nuggets for me but was thinking of using tofu in a batter for him.
I have a packet of Yorkshire pudding gluten free mix - would this work?
I could just be not so lazy and go to shops for gluten free flour but the weather is horrible and we're forecast heavy snow tomorrow so I'd rather stay in if possible!

Can you just use cornflour?

chesirecat99 · 17/02/2022 13:06

What are the ingredients? I've seen packets of Yorkshire pudding/pancake batter that say just add milk and eggs... so just flour or flour substitute Grin Some of them have powdered milk added though.

Here's the ingredients. I don't often make batter so didn't know I could just use cornflour.
I have egg substitute as well as soda water.

So it looks like it is just a mix of flours/starches to replace the flour ingredient for Yorkshire puddings, no added egg powder or milk powder. It should be fine to use it as a flour substitute in batter but if you've got cornflour, I would use that.

I make our gf yorkies with cornflour. They’re the best I’ve ever made. Much better than using gf flour!

Plump82 · 17/02/2022 13:29

That's really good to know! What would I add to the cornflour?

I'd go with a tempura style batter of cornflour and soda water.

Plump82 · 17/02/2022 13:38

Excellent. He better like this after all the effort I'm going to!

Gram flour makes a really good gluten-free batter.

I'll pick some up when I'm next out. For now I'm being lazy and using what I have in the house!

Cornflower and sparkling water, easy!

Or, just use regular flour and vodka. The alcohol will inhibit the formation of gluten in the batter.

Beer is also widely used (hence 'beer batter') and adds bubbles to make the batter fluffier, but unless you're lightning-quick - mixing it and then immediately frying - you'll get some gluten forming.

Is there not already gluten in the beer? I've made beer batter in the past.

We're not vodka drinkers so don't have that.

Vodka will not make wheat flour safe for someone who needs to be gluten/wheat free.

You can get gluten free beer though for making GF batter (and for drinking!).

MaizeAmaze · 17/02/2022 19:36

Ignore the vodka and wheat flour suggestion for a gluten free meal.

You can buy gluten free beer, but yes, normal beer contains gluten.

Plump82 · 17/02/2022 21:10

Thought I was going a bit mad there with that suggestion!
