breakfast cereals, how much for a 9mth old?

yes i'm here again, wondering if i could increase amount ds eats at breakfast, as he is waking a lot in the night, despite having a good lunch and tea. ds has a rice based cereal for breakfast with a couple of cubes of fruit. he will only eat about 4 heaped teaspoons, which mixes with about 2oz of milk. he might eat a bit of yoghurt as well, but only a few mouthfuls and seems full afterwards. this is the case even if his am bottle was 2 hours previous. the amounts for 7+ months on the packets seem a lot compared to what he has.

At 9mths ds was having 1-1.5 weetabix for breakfast, he has a bottle when he gets up and then bfast about an hour later.

Certainly means he has energy! Also he sometimes has porridge - about a tablespoon of oats soaked in milk overnight, and he has to have it cold or else.

Hope that helps.

Alibo - are you sure he's not waking cos he's teething? my ds has 4 coming through and had been waking too - but this morning it was 5.45 am before he woke. I class after 5am as 'through the night' - but the past few weeks he's been waking around 12.30/1.20am and I reckon it was his teethies

sure the teething that is bothering him, as yesterday he was crying after 30 minutes of his lunchtime nap, and that can't be hunger as he'd just eaten lunch!! but at night, he downs the milk like he's never eaten! and if he's not hungry he can be a real faff with the bottle. maybe its a bit of both?

Agree with TracyK. Don't get too stressed about amounts - most babies can regulate the amount they eat quite naturally and appetites vary enormously. Beware of getting into mealtime battles as this can make things worse. Teething sounds pretty likely.

ds was at nursery today so had no morning nap - then woke after 1 hr in afternoon and was really sobbing his heart out. I ended up giving him a tiny bit of calpol in case it was his teeth - but then he was really tired all afternoon and only really chirped up in his bath.
Plus Alibo - I htink you are right our 2 could be twins - so i'm sure your ds will have sore teeth too

hi again tracyk; our two do sound as though they have similar problems at the momment. we are praying for a better night tonight(see my latest contribution to the "9mth old waking at 4am" thread in the sleep section!! ) having said that he went to sleep around 7.40 tonight, and was crying by 8.15 ?! hope you have a decent night.

I'm praying for a good night too - although he may have been over tired with just an hours nap.
He has started to wake at 10.30ish - I wonder if he's getting to expect his dream feed!
Although he sometimes sleeps till 5.45/6ish - I still wake about 4.30 and can't get back to sleep.

alibo · 18/11/2004 22:59

well, story so far; woke at 8.15, 9.00 and 10.00 crying. so ended up giving him some medised at 10.30, and now he's crashed out.... will report back in am!

how did night go alibo? ds slept till 5am this morning, bf, bottle and back to sleep till 7. Didn't nap till 11. were going for lunch so woke him at 12.20 - he was all nice and smiley.
He ate loads at lunch off my plate, olive bread and olive oil, potato and carrot soup and french bread, plaice and mashed potato and then some baby apple pudding. He's just polishing off philly and pear brown bread sandwiches.
Heres for a long sleep tonight!

same again, awake from about 4.45, fed him bottle at 5.30, back to sleep till 8. still going to try and get him to have more solids in daytime, think its the only way he will not wake hungr so early. your little one ate well today, he's doing well eating sandwiches and french bread etc!!

Once he starts a new thing it start off a bit ropey - eg sandwiches - not much going in at all and I think he'll never manage it - but a couple of days later he manages to eat most of them. I cut the crusts off and cut into quite small squares and use soggy fillings so I can glue the 2 bits of bread together and the filling not fall out.
Lets hope he did feed well and will get him through tonight - he had a catnap at 4.45 this afternoon for 40 mins and woke up in a really grizzly mood.
But I'm resigned to an early wakeup - tbh I don't mind after 5am - its better then 2 am!
Hows your ds feeding today gone?
