Ideas for a treat I could bake for someone who is seriously ill...

I've got lovely neighbours. A few months ago one of them was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He's now had his pancreas removed, along with his gall bladder and part of his stomach. He's doing really well, getting out for short walks and is back to eating. He starts 6 months of chemo next week.

I'm no Mary Berry but I do enjoy baking. I wondered if anyone can suggest any sort of treat I could bake for him as a pick-me-up. I'm assuming low fat due to gall bladder removal. I've genuinely offered to help in any way I can, as have all the other lovely neighbours and friends, but I just had a notion that I could bake something tempting which would be easy on the digestion as a gift.

Any ideas most welcome Smile

That's a lovely thing to do.

This website talks about how sugar is the problem, not fat. www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/conditions-and-diseases/pancreatic-cancer/pancreatic-cancer-nutrition

It mentions protein bars so that might be an option? Or a "healthy" scone made with wholemeal like this maybe www.bhf.org.uk/informationsupport/support/healthy-living/healthy-eating/recipe-finder/apple-and-apricot-scone-wedges

The scone would be freezable and then they could serve it to guests, so that's helpful in a different way too even if your neighbour who is unwell doesn't fancy it.

@UniversalTruth Thanks so much for answering 🙂

I'll have a look at those links. I don't really know much about the situation his body is facing so was hoping people could point me in the right direction. Thanks again, it's appreciated 🍰

Perhaps an idea to make 'mini' versions of whatever you decide to go ahead with, if they now have a smaller stomach capacity? My dad had part of his stomach removed and could only cope with much smaller meals even once it healed.

@anxiousowl That's such a good suggestion - makes a lot of sense - thank you 🙂

My 9 year old loves baking, I've just realised this could be a good half term project for us 🤔

I have made good soups before. Freeze in mugs, muffin tins or large IceCube trays before bagging up and delivering ready for the freezer.

But whatever you do, make it freezable and make it small. I have yet to meet someone doing chemo who says they are always hungry.

@TheSandgroper Thank you - that's great advice 🙂
