Where to find Jerusalem artichoke?

SummaLuvin · 03/02/2022 14:28

I have a recipe I really want to try that uses Jerusalem artichokes (roasted Jerusalem artichoke and chickpea chaat, by Meera Sodha), I looked in my local Morrisons - normally good for fruit and veg, and they didn't have any, nor did it look like they had space on the shelf. Does anyone know where to find them?

It's not in season so you'll struggle to find them I'm afraid.

SummaLuvin · 03/02/2022 14:30

Dammit, I thought they started in February?

Ocado
Waitrose

Both have them atm

CatherineCawood · 03/02/2022 14:32

Waitrose for sure.

SummaLuvin · 03/02/2022 14:34

Just googled and a quick look says they are good over colder months. November - March. But can be a year round crop. So should be in season?

Waitrose isn't the most convenient, I knew they were probably a sure bet, but was hoping for something closer. No big deal if I can't get them.

They usually start disappearing after Christmas round here! Not seen them in the farm shop for a while.

Doubleraspberry · 03/02/2022 14:37

We obviously have warmer and earlier springs. :-)

haba · 03/02/2022 14:37

Our Sainsbury's had them this weekend - next to parsnips, leeks, globe artichokes.

Babdoc · 03/02/2022 14:54

Just a word of warning if you haven’t eaten them before, OP. They can cause massive farting flatulence! Grin

Doubleraspberry · 03/02/2022 14:55

Yep. Best to cook them very thoroughly. Your body needs time to adjust to them.

StarDanced · 03/02/2022 14:56

We got some in a Waitrose home delivery last week. Would that be an option if the shop location isn't convenient?

Bramshott · 03/02/2022 14:58

I had some this week in my Riverford box and composted them immediately because they are evil which suggests that they are probably in season right now.

newtb · 03/02/2022 15:06

Adding a stick or 2 of celery when you're boiling them reduces/removes thé flatulence.
Ate them with no problem and then had some that were so bad we were both in pain.

RhythmOfTheLight · 03/02/2022 18:08

I often use jarred artichokes in oil, I rinse off the oil and dry them.

Those are globe artichokes though.

Thanks to this thread I’ve got some JA from Waitrose. I feel a bit disloyal to the farm shop but rather thrilled at more months of flatulent fun ahead.

They are harder to get after Xmas i find. One of the few seasonal veg left.

They make a lovely soup.

SummaLuvin · 03/02/2022 19:18

ah ok, I might have missed the boat then if they are much more readily available pre-christmas, I will remember that for next year. I do really like them.

I will try M&S Food nearby. If that doesn't work I will either see if I can I be bothered to go to Waitrose or just substitute in sweet potato - it will be a very different flavour, but should still be super tasty.

If you plant them in the garden you will soon have enough to feed the neighbourhood. 😂

GurtBusty · 03/02/2022 19:21

I've got 2 buckets of fartichokes sat outside my back door - dug over my patch yesterday and found a lot of stragglers. I always struggle to come up with new ideas - roasted, soup, add to root veg mash. I'm going to try and find your curry recipe.

ThankYouVeryMuchGerry · 03/02/2022 22:02

Abel & Cole have them - you don't need to buy a vag box, you can just buy whatever you like and they deliver.

ThankYouVeryMuchGerry · 03/02/2022 22:03

VEG, veg box - not vag! Blush

DilkushaKitchen · 03/02/2022 22:10

They are definitely in season now. We're getting some in our Riverford veg box this week too, I'll have to look up that recipe, we usually give ours away Blush

averythinline · 03/02/2022 22:26

Ours in veg box too....I like roasted with lots garlic and good squeeze of lemon juice... or in a gratin with potatoes...

ponkydonkey · 03/02/2022 22:27

Oh but the wind ...,never ever again will I eat the evil wind producers 💨

StillWeRise · 03/02/2022 22:29

you'll find them in the soil Wink
