Cooking without salt/ stock cubes etc

I have to get my blood pressure down.

I don't add salt to food very much, maybe chips. But I use it in cooking.
Although I have switched to Lo Salt.
That's probably not the answer as I have to watch my kidneys too.
I use stock cubes, instant gravy, Marmite in cooking. I bought lo salt instant gravy but ended up crumbling a stock coupe as it was flavourless.

What can I try? Any advice or tips welcome please. Must be vegetarian though. Thanks

Just slowly cut down. Bit by bit.

Its what theu did with ready meals rather than just cut all the sugar out at once

Salt sorry

I rarely add salt or stock cubes. Everyone else's food tastes too salty to me.

Just persevere. Your taste buds will adjust.

When the kids started eating we had to reduce salt. Vegetables and egg don't need at all!!! Meats and carbs (pasta, rice....) need salt though.... but you can slowly reduce it :)

I would perhaps look at what you are cooking and have a bit of a diet overhaul altogether rather than just looking to reduce salt by using low salt alternatives.

It's just as important to increase potassium as it is to reduce sodium.

Rather than cooking things requiring salt why not try to focus on using other flavours like pepper/lemon/garlic/ fresh herbs etc.

Avoid uprocessed stuff as much as possible (even sliced bread has huge amounts of salt in it) which should free up your salt allowance enough to add a little sprinkle where its really needed (e.g chips).

Boots do salt free stock cubes for making baby food. They come in vegetable, chicken and beef flavours. You can also try Kallo low salt stock cubes. I don't ever use salt for cooking as have kidney issues

low sodium stock cubes.
add more herbs & spices

celeriac/parsnip/fennel are great for adding umami without adding salt.

You need to eat more raw food and less cooked. Cooked food needs a lot more salt to be edible. But if you ate a massive salad with a few cooked elements you will def be able to reduce your salt intake. I also find not cooking with food and just adding it at the table works - I have a traditional Indian salt pig with a small 1/4 tsp & it means I go the other way & not usually take enough salt in. But it works!

Cut down processed food too like bread / cereal. They have far more salt in them than anything else

Beepyboop · 24/01/2022 17:45

kallo organics have a no salt stock cube. Use 2 per 500ml rather than 1 as the packet says, otherwise it can be a bit tasteless.

Would adding more acid to your food help? Often people salt their food when it's an acidic component missing. A squeeze of lemon juice or even vinegar might liven up your food without salt./

I don't add salt to food. Celery is naturally salty so I usually use in stews as sofrito. But other things I don't add.

I freeze my veg scraps for stock without salt.

I have bought laver/ kelp on Amazon for stock for things like miso soup.
