Magimix 5200 XL—worth it?

I am looking for a large reliable food processor—mostly for the veg prep to be honest, but the baking potential is also a plus. The pricetag is a bit scary, but the warranty is long and everyone seems to have a 15+ year Magimix and it is still in daily use, so could be a bargain longterm.
Are the latest ones still built as well? Do you use yours as often as you thought? We eat a lot of veggies, and a lot of fresh salads and coleslaw so the veg prep features are my main draw.
Any help deciding to invest in a Magimix or go for something else would be helpful!

I think so. I'm not a particularly heavy user but would recommend. I'm sure someone else will be along shortly with more. And their customer service etc is excellent. Replaced something that got broken with no drama.

I have a roughly 10yo magimix that sees moderate use. It’s great for shredding/chopping. I usually use it for things like coleslaw. Occasionally pastry. I don’t really use it as a small food processor as I have a small Braun hand blender that does the same. I don’t do much baking with it as I have a Kitchenaid.

Policyschmolicy · 20/01/2022 20:02

Oh and we have the juicing attachment we also use.

The biggest issue with it is the washing up. Otherwise I think I would use it more.

BreakingUpWithMyPhone · 20/01/2022 20:05

Mine is only infrequently used. It has a 3 nested bowl thing going on, and I just find it a PITA as all of the bowl get dirty and need cleaned. I like it in principle though.

Glitterspy · 20/01/2022 20:06

I love my magimix (bought maybe 3 years ago). It’s not the massive one, actually think it’s one of the smaller compact ones but the large bowl chops enough carrots/cabbage to make a HUGE coleslaw (mixing bowl size).

I actually use it most regularly for grating cheese and makings dips (hummus etc)

gorgeousbimbam · 20/01/2022 20:06

Yes!

Ovenaffray · 20/01/2022 20:09

I love mine. It’s a 5200 and it’s 15 years old and still going strong.

The only thing it doesn’t do well is make pavlova I do everything else in it really successfully.

Great to hear positive reviews—can I ask how much storage space all the accessories and such take up?

Mine is from the 1970s. It's amazing. It will be used in the morning to make smoothies. I saw a similar one for £10 on ebay. The old ones are like tanks.

Ovenaffray · 20/01/2022 21:35

Oh the accessories are bulky. The ones I don’t use are on a top shelf in my pantry

I asked for a replacement kenwood I used constantly and was bought a magimix. I am not keen. I got it in October 19 so 2 years old, never use it, the creamer attachment broke quickly and got gunged up with butter and sugar so it was easier to mix by hand. It's incredibly heavy. My kenwood lived in the cupboard and came out all the time. This one I just CBA with the weight of it and also a faff to wash.

I use the little food processor which came with my braun handheld blender and chop in batches. Occasionally get out the magimix to make gingerbread or pastry but at Christmas I did it by hand rather than wash the fiddly aattachments. I hate it.

Bring back my kenwood. Unfortunately they only do a glass bowl one so I can't go back to my nicely long lasting plastic bowl one that cost less than £50 in 2007 and I chucked in 2019.

Doodle4 · 21/01/2022 07:36

Thanks for all the comments. How do you all store the accessories for the Magimix? Trying to make sure, beyond actually using it often enough to justify, I have the storage space needed.

They come in a plastic storage box so I just keep that in the cupboard.

CornishGem1975 · 24/01/2022 10:11

I bought my XL in 2005 and it's still going as strong as the day I bought it. I don't use it tons but it's there when I need it! Accessories are in a cupboard - as the previous OP said, they came in a little storage box.

This. Mine just sits in the cupboard now because the 3 bowl thing is such a pain.

I have the 5200 and use it often. My absolute favourite use is to grate a block of cheddar- takes moments and it keeps so well in the fridge.

Brilliant for breadmaking, cakes, soups, coleslaw.

I'm surprised by the 3-bowl comments above. I don't have that problem when using just the small bowl - I just need to clean the bowl I've used.

I also put all the washable parts in the dishwasher. I've had to replace the big bowl once in 15 years but for me life's too short to handwash kitchen stuff.

I have plenty of kitchen space so it lives on a worktop with the accessory container next to it

SciFiStirFry · 24/01/2022 12:33

Hated mine. Hated the nesting bowls, hated the washing up, hated that it weighed a ton and if it was left on the side it needed constant wiping.

I was delighted when it died (stuffed with bacon)

I've been hoping mine would die for years, but it's a stubborn bugger Grin
Curiousmouse · 24/01/2022 23:25

Love mine. Wouldn't be without it snd on my second, after 25 years. Use it tons, as did the kids!

Curiousmouse · 24/01/2022 23:30

In terms of storage , the old one has accessories in a drawer loose underneath it - 5100xl. . The appliance itself on the worktop. The new one -basically the same 5200xl- has the box of bits in a cupboard underneath.

mummycoop79 · 22/07/2022 08:36

I absolutely love mine, use it every day. The new ones have a 30 year warranty and my grandma has had hers since 1975! Especially good for quickly making cakes, grating coleslaw, mayonnaise etc.

C8H10N4O2 · 22/07/2022 08:43

I have on about 30 yrs old with a few of the extra blades. Its more than earned its money over the years, still in frequent use for much the same purposes as PPs. I also have a Kenwood of similar vintage also well used (although less now that the cake making and eating DC left home!). I can still get parts for both. The old Magimixes, Kenwoods and Kitchen Aids are like tanks.

There are some attachments which rarely leave the box so be selective on the extras 😀
