Weekly new recipe thread

1000 replies

SarahJessicaParkin · 15/01/2022 08:54

I've decided to try out a brand new recipe every week this year. I seem to make the same things on rotation all the time, so hope this will drag me out of my recipe rut and improve my not great cooking skills!

Would anyone like to join me?

Yes! My plan is to cook 2 recipes each week from my huuuuge amount of cookbooks! I don't use them enough.

I do have a Gousto box arriving tomorrow (just has chemo so feeling a bit brain foggy and this helps the first few days) but I also want to cook 2 recipes from my new Nadiya's Fast Flavours book. Tonight will be her Dirty Rice recipe that I have been meaning to try for over a week now!

SarahJessicaParkin · 15/01/2022 10:18

Hello! Yes, I have many, many cookbooks too. Need to actually use them.

I am considering a Nigella one this weekend, but it calls for mirin and rice wine or sake 😂. Bloody Nigella!

I have got so many cookbooks, but very rarely follow an actual recipe. I did invent something new to us this week though:
I roasted onions and peppers with gnocchi and some herbs. Added pesto and creme fraiche, then spinach. Parmesan and garlic bread to serve. It was lovely.

LittleFriendSusan · 15/01/2022 10:30

I'm in - also have an extensive collection of cookbooks so my plan is to include something new in every week's meal plan .

Nothing too exciting this week as I am running down my fridge / freezer supplies and just had a big veg box delivered yesterday, but I've planned sticky chicken thighs from the new Mowgli cookbook & roasted cauliflower from one of the Joe Wicks books. Also going to try a cheesy jacket spuds filling from DDs student cookbook but not sure that really counts as a recipe!

SummaLuvin · 15/01/2022 13:54

you can get small, 150ml, bottles of mirin from amazon. I know some people don't like using amazon, but I find it great for asian cupboard ingredients.

SarahJessicaParkin · 15/01/2022 14:25

Oh thank you, that's a great tip re amazon.

I think I'm going to do a Waitrose one this week though. I was doing some decluttering today and came across a recipe card that I picked up in waitrose, dated March last year Blush. I've never made it, so I'm going to do that I think. It is a ham and lentil gratin with pesto breadcrumbs. Sounds like something we will all eat and might become part of our midweek repertoire quite easily

I have set myself a challenge to cook new things from my endless cookbooks. I had 3 for christmas this year! I really enjoy cooking but it’s so easy to get stuck in a rut. I find that I want to cook spicy foods but I have a young family so would be good to find recipes we can all enjoy

WeeFae · 17/01/2022 08:12

I am unable to join in this week, but eager to see what everyone else is cooking!

SarahJessicaParkin · 17/01/2022 08:15

I still haven't done mine this week, but I definitely will. Will report back with recipe and maybe a pic if it looks alright

I'll be trying two new recipes.

Burmese Mango Salad with Peanut and Lime from East, Meera Sodha. I will be adding some grilled chicken and rice noodles to make it into a full meal.

Fish with Arroz Verde, a Barrafina recipe.

LittleFriendSusan · 17/01/2022 09:17

I made this soup yesterday (recommended on another thread) - www.samstern.co.uk/recipe/energy-boost-carrot-soup-with-orange-coconut-coriander/

Made a change from the usual carrot & coriander & also used up one of the many oranges in the fruit bowl!

Xiaoxiong · 17/01/2022 09:21

To all those struggling to use their cookbooks I use www.eatyourbooks.com/ - it's worth every penny as you tell the website which cookbooks you have, and you can then search your own cookbooks with the stuff you already have, or to find something new that you fancy. It even tells you what page it's on in the cookbook. I find it especially helps me use the recipes that don't have pictures that somehow I always forget about!

This week I'm also going to try 2 new recipes - thai beef salad from Louise Parker, and roast parsnips and carrots with soy and honey from A Cooks Book by Nigel Slater that I got over Christmas.

ChaosTrulyReigns · 17/01/2022 09:57

What a great idea for a thread!

I'll take inspo from you but I'm do flaky, don't think I can commit to a new recipe a week .

The lentil and ham gratin sounds interesting, would you share a photo please @SarahJessicaParkin?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 17/01/2022 19:53

@SummaLuvin That salad sounds fabulous. I've got 'East' and haven't made anything out of it yet.

Just been looking at an old Rose Elliot book and seen a couple of contenders for next week: a Japanese cabbage pancake thing and various simple curries and stir fries. I just don't have time in the week for anything complicated.

IpanemaPeaHen · 17/01/2022 19:58

I’ll be on for this. I received a couple of new cookbooks for Christmas. Also want to use some of my older books more, saw Nigella Kitchen mentioned on another thread today. I’ve never really used that one and I’ve had it years.

LoveFall · 17/01/2022 20:15

I am going to try Nigel Slater's mushroom and dill tart this week. I even bought a tart pan as I have been wanting to master pastry for a while.

Fredstheteds · 17/01/2022 20:18

I use hello fresh for the recipes - new inspiration

PurpleDaisies · 17/01/2022 20:24

Love this idea. It was a new year’s resolution here.
I made this on Saturday and really liked it. I used tofu instead of mushrooms. Will definitely make again.

Thai beef salad was a winner! Even DH who is usually rejects the concept of salad for dinner was extremely happy. The salad itself was relatively simple, just a pile of fresh herbs (coriander, FL parsley, basil), cucumber, tomatoes, red onion. But then you add (1) leftover roast beef, (2) roasted & salted peanuts and (3) a really nice thai-style dressing with sesame oil, fish sauce, lime juice, chili, ginger and garlic.

Will definitely be making it again, since we (still) have a mountain of leftover beef from our Sunday roast.

Worth trying new recipes!!!

SarahJessicaParkin · 18/01/2022 14:32

That sounds delicious @Xiaoxiong! And no obscure ingredients. Might make that my new recipe next week

It's Taco Tuesday chez Parkin the evening, so won't be trying anything new tonight. Will peruse cookbooks this evening and might pick something else to cook tomorrow, as dcs turned their nose up at the ham and lentil idea!

I am making this tonight - www.gousto.co.uk/cookbook/chicken-recipes/korma-style-chicken-with-rice-tomato-salad

Savemesome · 18/01/2022 20:07

@SummaLuvin @RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie
I also have East, it was a christmas present. We had sprout nasi goreng tonight and it was delicious! Please share any others you try if they are successes

SummaLuvin · 18/01/2022 21:08

@Savemesome the Burmese salad was delicious and will be entering rotation here - I keep a list of 'successful meals' I can refer to if I'm drawing a blank. I added 25g per person of vermicelli noddles (dried weight) and a chicken breast to make it more of a 'complete' meal and it worked really well - it would be great without those additions, but DH and I have only 1 big meal a day, so the protein and carbs were needed.

The sprout nasi goreng had caught my eye, so might need to try that. I love rice.

PurpleDaisies · 18/01/2022 21:13

I might need to invest in East purely for that sprout recipe. I love sprouts.

Asian Green has two good sprout recipes-a sticky orange soy sprout rice salad and sweet chilli sprouts with coconut noodles. We make both quite regularly.

@PurpleDaisies I hate to take a book sale away from Meera Sodha, as I think she is great. But she is/was a cookery writer for the Guardian so you can find some of her recipes there - of course you get more in the books, and some she has further modified and improved.
