Dried Sour Cherries

SummaLuvin · 11/01/2022 19:57

Any ideas of how to use up some dried sour cherries? I bought a 500g pack for Sour Cherry and White Chocolate Hot Cross Buns last year and I still have about 400g left. I will probably make the HCB again for Easter, but that still leaves 300g...

Would they work on breakfast cereal/in porridge?

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 11/01/2022 20:00

Was just coming on to suggest porridge. With a bit of dark chocolate as well - so good

toastofthetown · 11/01/2022 20:02

Would biscotti appeal?

SummaLuvin · 11/01/2022 20:09

I love porridge and biscotti! Thank you.

Porridge per PP, but also brilliant in fridge cake- Cadbury dark mild, choco Leibniz biscuits bashed up, sour cherries, dried apricots cut up (if you have them) & a tidy bit of golden syrup. So good…..

There's a Persiana lamb and sour cherry meatball recipe OP

Black forest brownies or soak in cherry brandy and use in a black forest triffle. We also snack on them as an alternative to raisins.

Cotswoldmama · 11/01/2022 21:08

I used some in Tiffin once, they were amazing!

Roseandgeranium · 11/01/2022 21:10

I think Nigella might use them in her Black Forest brownie recipe...

piglet81 · 11/01/2022 21:18

Just eat them, they’re better than sweets!

LlamaofDrama · 11/01/2022 21:27

Awesome in chocolate chip cookies!

NiceTwin · 11/01/2022 21:28

I use them in Rocky road.

iluvnettletea · 11/01/2022 21:39

Use them in baking like raisins or sultanas. They’re good in waffles or biscuits.

GinIronic · 11/01/2022 21:47

Make dark chocolate flapjacks with them.

This brownie recipe from the ‘Green & Black’s Chocolate Recipes: Unwrapped’ cookbook is really good, have made these many times and they always turn out really well

Chocolate & Cherry Brownies

Ingredients:
300 g unsalted butter
300 g dark chocolate (minimum 60%, broken into pieces)
5 large eggs
400 g granulated sugar
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
200g plain flour
1 teaspoon salt
100 g of dried cherries

Method:
Grease a roasting or baking tray. In a bowl (placed on top of a pot of boiling water) melt the butter and chocolate together until thick and creamy. Meanwhile beat together sugar, eggs and vanilla extract until thick and creamy. The mixture should easily coat the back of a spoon. Once the butter-chocolate mixture has melted, remove from stove and beat into the egg mixture. Sift the flour and salt together, and add to the wet ingredients. Mix until mixture is well combined. Drain morello cherries and fold into the brownie mixture. Pour mixture into the tray and bake for 20-30 minutes at 180C. Once finished baking, allow to cool and cut into pieces.

Use them in baking like raisins or sultanas.

Probably should have said in the OP, but the reason I have struggled to use them up is I really dislike dried fruit in most baked goods (cookies, flapjacks, tiffin....) so those don't really appeal. But the meatballs, biscotti, porridge, and brownies - if I'm feeling brave - sound perfect to get most of them used.

You can rehydrate them with some water and a little lemon juice and make some fabulous jam.

AnotherMansCause · 12/01/2022 08:49

I was going to suggest using them in dark chocolate flapjack or brownies but after your update I agree with the PP who said just eat them like sweets. They're delicious. I buy them by the bagful just for this reason! Grin

jay55 · 12/01/2022 09:01

I use them in baked apples instead of mixed fruit. Only uses a few at a time though.

TeeBee · 12/01/2022 09:03

Granola

Heronatemygoldfish · 12/01/2022 09:05

I'd be interested in where you managed to get a 500g pack from. We spend a fortune on small packs from Sainsbury's as DH adds them to nuts and snacks on them...

SummaLuvin · 12/01/2022 09:20

@Heronatemygoldfish amazon, I couldn't find any in the supermarkets near me.

I came on here to suggest this very thing.
Chemenger · 12/01/2022 09:21

I get mine in Costco.

Heronatemygoldfish · 12/01/2022 09:28

@Summaluvin thank you!
Will have a look...
