Chocolate meringue roulade

I have in mind the dessert I want to make for NYE but can't find a recipe - basically a roulade / yule log cross that is dairy-free (but doesn't require any specialist vegan ingredients that I won't have in the house or be able to buy in the local small supermarket). So I'm thinking meringue and chocolate swiss roll type sponge rolled together with a diary-free spread/cocoa/vanilla buttercream. Is that feasible and if so how do I do it?

Mary Berry's chocolate roulade on the bbc food website looks like a good atarting point!

Thanks, I’ve made that one before - it’s nice but no meringue layer, just sponge.

Just found this:

Choc Roulade

I might do it too but use raspberries as a filling instead.

This looks good! We need dairy free too. I made a disastrous Yule log this year!

@whyohwhyohwhyohwhywhy you can get a vegan whipping cream. Can’t remember who it’s made by, but it’s available in supermarkets.

Maybe Oatly do a whipping cream too?

Elmlea do a vegan whipping cream, but worth checking the guests that aren't dairy free if you switch to it as I can't eat the damned stuff.

Honestly, if I was going to make a dairy free pudding I think I would be doing one that didn't really so heavily on things that normally contain dairy? Especially if you don't have a big supermarket. I assuming from this that dairy free can include eggs.

What about something like Nigella's dark chocolate olive oil mousse ?

Alternatively to go closer to your original idea, you might be able to wrangle that as the filling, then the meringue wouldn't have dairy in anyway, and then if you used Mary Berry's can't go wrong chocolate cake for the sponge (made with oil not butter) you'd only have to sub the 1/4 pint of milk for almond milk or oat milk or something and then I think the whole thing would be fine.

We have the whipping cream, it is fine.
I consider this to be pretty dairy free. Only one sub - being the cream.

Merengue is a dairy free dream pudding.

Yule log was a disaster because I didn't roll it well and it turned into a smush. Twice

Get yourself to Cook
They do a phenomenal roulade

Thanks all. That one found by @ByeByeMissAmericanPie looks lovely (though I'd agree raspberries better than blackberries).

But I probably should have said that, as well as one of the attendees needing dairy-free, my kids don't like cream anyway so I suspect a vegan cream-substitute won't be liked either. Hence why I was thinking buttercream (and hence why I thought it needed to be at least partly sponge as buttercream next to meringue just seems wrong.

I've now found this one which is a bit more sponge-like, though I'd need to leave out the coffee to keep everyone happy: www.deliciousmagazine.co.uk/recipes/chocolate-coffee-meringue-roulade/ and could perhaps fill with chocolate frosting (the sort that's dairy-free spread, cocoa, sugar, water)?

Also started looking at cakes instead: www.deliciousmagazine.co.uk/recipes/double-baked-chocolate-meringue-brownie/ or www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/chocolate_brownie_64092 and am thinking of either simple option of the second one or the first one but with buttercream or frosting in middle.

Do you think either of those would work?

@AliMonkey - I cook GF stuff most of the time, but I’ve had a lot of success cooking brownies and serving them with ice cream (offer Dairy free ice cream as an alternative) and then fresh raspberries? Or if you can get cherries... then you have a deconstructed Black Forest gateau!

Also look up vegan cakes. They taste pretty good.
