Bean is only 25 wks and I was really hoping to get to 6 months but I think he might be ready now.

He is totally breastfed but recently has still been starving hungry after a feed and he hasn't been lasting between feeds like he usually does. he's still sleeping through the night most nights but during the day he wants food constantly.

Is he ready for solids or just being a pest?

is 25 weeks not 6 months?

beansmum · 16/11/2004 10:07

nearly! he has a week to go. I know it's only a guideline and all babies are different but I feel funny about starting him too early!

oh beansmum dont worry. i know people who started solids at 6 weeks (yes 6). my dd had baby rice at 22 weeks. you have done extremely well to go this far, esp when baby is hungry! you could start on stewed pears or something, im no expert but they are lovely and sweet and i bet baby would love it! and they are not too solid! best of luck xxx

Twiglett · 16/11/2004 10:11

I started a week early too .. cos I have no patience at all ... and wanted to

beansmum · 16/11/2004 10:14

I know! I really want to see him with orange mush all over his face! I'm pretty sure he's ready, but I don't want to start too soon just because I'm impatient. Someone tell me what to do!!!!!!!

From her change in behaviour and feeding habits I had a feeling DD was ready at 4.5 months. Felt funny about it too but gave her a spoonful of baby rice to see how she reacted. From her eagerness that day and her absolute joy in food from then on, I started to wonder if she'd actually been ready far earlier! I'm convinced I got it right and didn't do her any harm. Go with your instinct.

Zinger · 16/11/2004 10:19

PS little bean will tell you if he's not ready

Twiglett · 16/11/2004 10:20

Beansmum does this help

YOU HAVE MY APPROVAL TO WEAN

ya big pansy

nailpolish · 16/11/2004 10:20

JUST DO IT! im sure lots of people will tell you the same thing. they are so cute with a spoon at first, you put the food in their mouth and they dont know what to do, just poke their tongue out! as i said you have done really well, not starting earlier with a hungry baby so just start! 25 weeks is not early really xxx

Zinger · 16/11/2004 10:22

PPS There isnt a switch at 26 weeks that says 'not ready yesterday, ready today' - it's just a rough guide and guidelines change constantly. And every baby's different. Go for it!

beansmum · 16/11/2004 10:24

ok, will get out the spoons I bought weeks ago! I'm so excited! But if he gets tons of allergies i'm blaming you lot.

Oh my mum is going to be so happy, she thought I was cruel not to give him 'proper' food earlier

yay! cant wait to hear how you get on. wish i was there to see wee beans face when the 1st spoonful goes in! heehee

sponge · 16/11/2004 10:54

Just stick to baby rice and fruit & veg at first and he'll be fine. It's the early introduction of things like wheat and eggs that causes problems. I've never heard of anyone being allergic to pears .

hunkermunker · 16/11/2004 13:28

I'm allergic to apples, peaches, plums, cherries and nectarines...but not pears And not allergic to any of them cooked!

JulieF · 16/11/2004 14:02

26 weeks is a rough guide, some babies are ready at 5 months, others not until 7. Nothing magical happens to a babies gut at 26 weeks but 6 months is the average time it takes for the wall to close.

If you give your baby a little food and he doesn't thrust it back out of his mouth, if he is starting to sit supported and will try and eat a piece of finger food then he is ready.

If on the other hand he shows no interest and rejects the food, wait a little longer.

After all it should be "baby led" weaning

beansmum · 16/11/2004 16:32

I couldn't wait, so gave bean some carrot for lunch! he loved it, but wanted to help by putting his hands in it and then grabbing the spoon off me. Couldn't find any pears in the co-op but hopefuly he'll be ok with carrot.

Would it be alright to give him tinned pears? All it says on the ingredients is pear halves, pear juice, gluten free, no colours or preservatives.

think the pears sounds ok, beansmum. use a hand blender or just mash it up really well with a fork. glad he liked the carrot! you will have multicoloured bibs from now on!

beansmum · 16/11/2004 16:49

never mind multicoloured bibs, I have a multicoloured bean! It got all over his face, think there might be some up his nose.

its just the cutest thing! i can imagine the wee face, wish i could see!

sweetkitty · 17/11/2004 21:40

congratulations beansmum for sticking it out till 25 weeks

DD is only 17 weeks but I'm dying to try her out with some food I won't though don't feel she is ready but really want to see her little face with orange mush over it.

At mum and baby group it's like a race to see who's started solids first as if "my babies far cleverer than your cos he had solids at 12 weeks etc" my mum thinks I'm starving her as well cos I was on solids at 8 weeks!!!

Fran1 · 17/11/2004 21:45

i was going to suggest, make sure you give veg as well as fruit so he doesn't get too used to sweet flavours, glad to see you started with carrot!!

Enjoy and happy weaning!
