Making sarnies the night before - does it ever work?

I'm trying to get out of the house earlier on the days I work, but as Mij's third law of shared childrearing says, even when DP has responsibility for getting DD ready for anything, final responsibility for them both still lies with Mummy. So I do DDs packed lunch.

As childminder can no longer heat up three separate toddler meals - don't blame her, no microwave - we're mostly doing sandwiches. I can get everything else done the night before, but not these, as I can't find a way to make sure they're still tasty the next day. Any tips?

In fact, if I could find a way of doing this, it would save a fortune as I would then take sandwiches too, avoiding the need for a costly nip to the very nice Italian deli round the corner (good job I only work away from home two days a week).

Please help.

they were lovingly hand finished too, I had them heeled and glued red glitter on and then gemstones on the bow. All very cheap and effective.

Oh that's good MrsCarrot.

Tbh Mr Lollipop doesn't generally do his, but I respond very unhappily (!) if he ever makes suggestions for improvements.

In his defence I have only taken out the wheely bin once in 5 years of marriage! I prefer to do the indoor stuff if it means he does the cold things outside.

is it wrong that i would love a pair too

MrsCarrot · 20/12/2007 21:15

I do not make sandwiches for Mr Carrot! He gets his from a cafe near work.

MrsCarrot · 20/12/2007 21:16

Have you not got any, Rubyslippers? You must make some.

moondog · 20/12/2007 21:17

I do 'em the night before and put all bags in the car too.

Sorry Mrs Carrot you clearly wrote ds1 and I misread it as dh hence my nonsensical comments later on the thread.

onepieceoflollipop · 20/12/2007 22:10

Moondog I may start putting the bags in the car. dd1 (3.11yrs) has been known to rearrange/remove the contents of bags left nicely packed by the front door, meaning we occasionally go out without essentials like nappies.

I'm clearly doing something Very Wrong then, cos when I've done sarnies for myself and put them in the fridge the night before, no matter what I've wrapped them in or filled them with, the bread looks and tastes tired, the insides flavourless and the whole thing is generally unappetising.

DD, who is just 18mths, doesn't need any excuse to turn her nose up at food, and doesn't do many fillings - we're veggie and the only cheese she likes is cream cheese, so we rotate that and marmite. I send a pot of cherry tomatoes, grapes, other wee bits and pieces too plus a banana and yoghurt (which can, of course, all be packed the night before) so the child won't starve. I've experimented with different bread, pitta, wraps, the lot. Maybe I just have the Sandwich Hand of Death.

Perhaps if I heeled them and stuck a few sequins on them it would help...

I always do the kids lunch-boxes in the morning and their water bottles.

always have done, even when I had a F/T job.

I seem to be the odd one out

Iota · 21/12/2007 17:41

oh scratch that - kids weren't at school when I had a job
