Ally, thank you for this thread, so sorry for hijack, my head has exploded

BoysAreLikeReindeer · 20/12/2007 19:13

Ooops

See ?

NAB3hundredbaubles · 20/12/2007 19:14

Off to check out Lakeland. Always thought ricer made the mash go a funny consistency but if it means I don't have to peel I want one. Now.

fizzbuzz · 20/12/2007 19:19

How long does it take to mash a lot with those, or can you buy super big ones?

Hulababy · 20/12/2007 19:26

Takes seconds to do one half of a potato IME. I am planning on using it to do mash for 9 people on Boxing Day!

BoysAreLikeReindeer · 20/12/2007 19:38

This is what happens when you live in the arse of nowhere....no decent shops grrr, and no idea of what is out there either

Have emailed my sister in Cheshire to nip in to her local Lakeland to get me one pronto, PDQ, asap, urgently.

ILiveinhope · 20/12/2007 19:44

Lakeland do deliver!!!!

Bluestocking · 20/12/2007 19:46

Potato ricers are the absolute bizzo. I didn't realise you didn't have to peel though - that just makes them all the more fabulous. Plus, if you are feeling very generous, you can let your LOs rice playdough, which is a surefire hit.

BoysAreLikeReindeer · 20/12/2007 19:50

I am in potato heaven

fizzbuzz · 20/12/2007 20:21

So let me get this right.........boil spuds with peel(huge pan if required)

Shove entire boiled spud in ricer, and it is mashed? {hmm]

Do you have to cut spuds in 1/2 or smaller? Is it hard work to use like a tin opener, or easy peasy on the wrists and fingers?

Bluestocking · 20/12/2007 20:22

Really easy to use, the handles are long enough that you get lots of leverage.

Hulababy · 20/12/2007 20:24

I cut in half and put cut side down onto the metal bit, then squeeze. Dead easy to use and no pressure required hardly. My 5yo DD can do it no problem. Then remove discarded peel and start again.

I don't boil the potatoes - just blast in microwave.

Niecie · 20/12/2007 20:40

Do you microwave all potatoes Hulababy? I microwave jacket potatoes but I always imagined they would go a bit rubbery if you microwaved them when they are pealed like carrots do. Carrots are not nice microwaved. Have you shown us another shortcut to potato heaven - you don't even have to boil them anymore!?

AchristmasRGPARGYcarol · 20/12/2007 20:47

Oh potato ricers are the NUTZ!!!! i first saw Nigella use one and DP and I just looked at each other in "that knowing way" and that was it. One was ordered from tinternet that same night!

I have tried the ricer both with spuds peeled and spuds not peeled. Personally i prefer them peeled as it's less messy when it comes to squeezing them through the ricer.

Wouldn't be without mine tho!

Oh and PS - i am also nicking "sweet farkin' chocolate buttons"

CantSleighWontSleigh · 20/12/2007 20:50

I've had one for years, and love it, but have never even tried not peeling the potatoes. Will do next time though!

ally90 · 20/12/2007 20:51

just got back on and seen how many posts there are and I don't have to peel?

lol at scullery maid hands reindeer! Mine look a tad aged...< looks at translucent crepe paper skin on hands>

I'm off to lakeland...and free postage? I may be some time...

PaulaYatesbiggestfan · 20/12/2007 20:53

i rice mine but i do peel them as well

Hulababy · 21/12/2007 12:50

Niecie - only potatoes I microwave are big old ones for mash.

I never microwave for jackets as I don't think they taste the same. I do them in a hot oven for an hour or so so the insides are all fluffy and the outside nice and crispy. Youm

lyra41 · 21/12/2007 13:11

I never peel potatoes, just wash them and use a normal masher. I figure the skin is good fibre and vitamins. Also I find the ricer too messy.

NAB3hundredbaubles · 21/12/2007 17:40

Just a thought - as it appears you can only do 1 potato at a time doesn't the mash go cold by the time you have done enough for the whole family? In my case, 5 people.

How long do they need blasting in the microwave for and in how much water?

Thank you.

howtheBOOKTHIEFstolechristmas · 21/12/2007 17:48

Best Kitchen Gadget Ever.

It's really quick and easy to use, works so quickly that your mash does stay hot, and you can use it for any root veg so it's v good for making mash for babies or yummy potato & parsnip mash.

I got mine for about £6 in IKEA.

WanderingHolly · 21/12/2007 17:52

No the mash doesn't go cold.

You put the whole spud in the microwave and blast it, no water no peelage no washing up.

I love my potato ricer.

NAB3hundredbaubles · 21/12/2007 18:22

How long do you blast it for?
