Turkey roll for 40

ChampagneLassie · 22/12/2021 14:16

Help changing plans mean we are 40 for Christmas lunch with a 5kg turkey roll. How much will this feed? How much more should we buy. Slightly panicking but also dont want to have way too much (not least that storing, cooking all the food is a challenge). Thanks

Forty?! Forty humans? Bloody hell.

I think they say a 5kg turkey for 10 people??

OpposableThumbs2 · 22/12/2021 14:28

I think it should do closer to 20 as it's boneless but still nowhere near enough.

BrieAndChilli · 22/12/2021 14:30

where the hell are you going to seat 40 people?!
Would it not be better to split down into smaller groups - especially with covid etc

Chemenger · 22/12/2021 14:35

I would say you need twice as much turkey. I don’t see how you can possibly cook for that many without a catering kitchen with huge pots and pans and multiple large ovens.

Mammyloveswine · 22/12/2021 14:40

40 people??? How?

Gardeningtipsneeded · 22/12/2021 14:42

I am immediately massively over invested here.

40? 40?

Where are you hosting
Where are they sitting
Who are they
What’s happening here

Gardeningtipsneeded · 22/12/2021 14:43

A friend used to hire the local community centre which had a catering kitchen for her large family on Christmas Day, but even she only did 30 odd I think.

CPL593H · 22/12/2021 14:58

(Faints in horror at idea of feeding 40) You really will need more than a 5kg. 10kg would give you 250 g per person but that's before shrinkage I'd say at least another 5kg of solid meat needed and doubt there will be leftovers to speak of.

MrsTerryPratchett · 22/12/2021 14:59

Why on earth are you doing this?

WashableVelvet · 22/12/2021 15:17

That’s 125g per person, probably 90g ish after shrinkage. I think you’ll need a further 5kg (I’d do 5kg
pigs in blankets!) then you’ll be fine. Plus I calculate on about 250g per person (raw) for veggies, that’s three portions a head.

So many questions...

ChampagneLassie · 22/12/2021 17:05

My partner has a big family, it was supposed to be 30 but due to a barevment last min increase of numbers. I'm part of the lunch cooking crew, different people took responsibility different bits. Person responsible for neat just asked me if I thought enough with bigger numbers and I didn't, thought I'd seek other estimates. I think we should be OK on the other food. Dinning table sits 20, 2 sittings. It will be a bit of a relay. Lots pf prep days before. Thanks for all the input, better too much. We'll get some turkey crowns.

Why? Big but close family and family death means this will be last Christmas in their childhood home... its sad but hopefully a celebration

This happened with us one year. Same reason. We did a buffet with Turkey, ham and a bbq. The bbq made it happier if y see what i mean. No worries about seating people.

Funnily enough a BBQ was muted as a potential idea...in the we're going with LOTS of pigs in blanket and there's a veggie nut roast and the hope that between all the trimings this be enough food for everyone 🤞

Brilliant. Hope all goes well tomorrow!

It was a success! 2 sittings x 20 plenty of food we managed to serve everything hot enough. It actually ran really nicely. I think the benefit of lots of people was everyone had assigned jobs a bit like a restaurant. So someone set table, cleared, veg, meat, desert, drinks etc etc so actually a lot easier than say if I were single handedly hosting 6. I loved it.
