If you dont have a traditional christmas lunch, what do you have?

I can never be bothered with preparing a traditional dinner for Christmas but I do try to do something a bit special that we wouldn't have everyday day. Its normally something that can be prepared and let to cook without much fuds so that I can go about enjoying the day rather than being tied to the kitchen.

This year I am doing a winter vegetable toad in the hole and a cauliflour cheese. Anyone willing to share what not traditional food they will be making for christmas dinner?

This year, there'll be me, husband and 1 adult son (unattached) so we're going to have Beef Rogan Josh, rice, home-made naans, samosas and onion bhajis

Turkey, roast potatoes and baked beans. Stuff all that faffing. I do it every Sunday anyway!

DH and I are having fillet steak this year. Not sure what DS is having yet, he wants Domino's! I think probably a burger but maybe a home made pizza. He is 8 and very fussy.

Georgyporky · 20/12/2021 18:30

I don't want dinner at lunchtime as it's so soon after breakfast.

We both dislike turkey, so if I'm at home I'll perhaps cook goose or beef.

We're supposed to be going away for Xmas, but I've got some frozen lobsters in case that nasty hypocritical idiot pulls the plug again.

A lot of random food. Every year there is pizza, Russian potato salad and Spanish omelette - only the latter two are somewhat traditional in our region of Spain.

Sometimes there is a version of aspic jelly, a traditional dish from my parents’ country of origin. Sausages and goats’ cheese salads were on the menu last year.

Lots of Christmas cakes, Christmas sweets and biscuits and Christmas drinks. But it’s definitely not the traditional meal, and we love it.

We go for a curry. A couple of 'sharpeners' in the pub on the way down, curry, big bag of leftovers for later. Lovely.

mommybear1 · 20/12/2021 18:33

Beef for us we were going to go for a beef wellington but time has escaped me to practice one 😂. Chicken Byriani for us on Boxing Day with poppadoms, naans and all the sides home made and the meal I am actually most looking forward to but I couldn't convince DH it would be fine to have it on Christmas Day 😁

Shoulder of lamb this year, with roast potatoes, cavalo nero maybe, creamed spinach. Followed by lemon tart. I haven't had turkey at Christmas for about 30 years.

Loveisthere · 20/12/2021 18:47

Lobster and steak

AuntieMarys · 20/12/2021 18:48

Eating out this year. In the past I've done shoulder of lamb, lasagne and shepherds pie

I did goose, red cabbage, roast potatoes, onions in white sauce with pickles to cut the fat of the goose.

By myself I'd go for a dozen oysters. And for supper, crab on toast.

I'm in the US and always do a special breakfast usually cinnamon buns Christmas morning and then for lunch ham either a citrus glaze I've made from scratch or a pre glazed ham fully cooked that just needs light reheating with cheesy potatoes, cranberry sauce, cornbread and a veggie. I made white chocolate almond cookies this past weekend for dessert. I don't find holiday meals that stressful cause hubby is in charge of our son.

languagelover96 · 21/12/2021 10:08

Turkey sandwiches
Plum pudding
Fruit cake
Candy canes
Cranberry sauce
Biscuits and sweets and chocolates
Potato salad

Laska2Meryls · 21/12/2021 10:14

We are having Venison carpaccio with parmesan and rocket ,
other salads and home made foccacia

Smoked salmon and parma ham/emmenthal crostinis to start with bubbly

Coffee and chocolate semifreddo for desert

I reckon we will be the only family in the UK to have this !

Laska2Meryls · 21/12/2021 10:17

Boxing Day will be a bit more trad with stuffed rolled pork and roasties plus: more salad , all the cheese and pickles , coleslaw stuffing etc

KatyMac · 21/12/2021 10:17

We have the full roast on Christmas Eve & then on Christmas day we have homemade pizza (with leftover roast as a topping....well pigs in blanket/cranberry etc)

4 adults and topping the pizza is a great activity to fill in time between playing games and watching crap tv

givemepiece · 21/12/2021 13:25

Fillet of beef with dauphinois for main. Glazed carrots n whatnot

Cruelty on toast to start (foie gras sorry sorry DH is French and he won't accept Xmas without it)

Pavlova for pudding

Never done it but I'm increasingly tempted next year to turn the garden into some sort of festive grotto/shanty town (being realistic, it won't be stylish like I'll aim for) maybe with a fire pit and gazebo and either use the bbq or pizza oven and have a vat of mulled wine on the go, maybe a nice stew too, toast marshmallows on the fire with fairy lights and blankets and keep it really casual. I've not floated the idea yet!!

Shedmistress · 21/12/2021 13:44

For years we had chilli, I broke this one year when my DSD turned up having not had any food at all, her mother hadn't cooked her anything so I did a basic roast [veggie so quite speedy and had most stuff in anyway] and we've had that ever since. We don't go all out, the only extras are sprouts and pannetone for pudding.

AlfonsoTheUnrepentant · 21/12/2021 13:46

@Loveisthere

Lobster and steak
That's what I ate on Christmas Day when I was growing up. My family rarely had turkey.

We had smoked oysters washed down with brandy on Christmas Eve.

That sounds magic. I'm sure you'll have a fab time.
