Winter picnic ideas

GnomeDePlume · 19/12/2021 14:44

Having an outdoor pre-Christmas family meet up with DM. Does anyone have any ideas for nice things to eat while sat outside next to a bonfire please?

So far we have sausage rolls, pizza pieces and mince pies.

Not looking for a full meal just some tasty snacks which will help keep the cold and possibly damp out.

Any suggestions gratefully received!

You can cook sausages and keep them warm in a food flask, then take finger rolls and do hotdogs on the park.

Similar theme but using a food flask you could do chilli or a chunky soup, slightly less picnic like but delicious and warming.

Will you be able to keep things warm by / in the fire ?
New spuds cooked like jacket spuds
Chicken wings
Gala or other meat pie
Mini quiche

Cheeses and crackers

Lots of hot drinks , mulled wine , mulled cider , cocoa, bovril,

8f you have or can borrow a couple of slow cookers you can keep the hot drinks 'on tap'
Or if it's safe to do so put them in big pans near the fire

Soup in a flask to put out into mugs?

ElfCalavicci · 19/12/2021 15:00

Hmm just 're read your post , if the fire is not yours ( a organised group ?? ) and your not at home use flasks for the drinks and wrap the food in alternating in tin foil and newspaper layer's .

Soup in a flask and cheese toasties. That’s a classic winter picnic.

GnomeDePlume · 19/12/2021 15:31

I was debating soup. Personally I cant abide it! Not a fan of wet savoury food. But I am prepared to forego my dislike of the stuff.

We will be at DM's house. The fire will be in her garden. It isnt a large fire so not suitable for keeping things warm other than people. We will have some use of the kitchen possibly. DM isnt the most organised person so I can see it already being used to keep the sprouts on a low light until Christmas day.

The suggestion to use food flasks or wrap food in alternate layers of foil and newspaper is a good one.

Thank you for the suggestions so far.

Just to clarify, DM is quite elderly and not very mobile. We would like to bring the food to her ready to go rather than rely on the kitchen being usable.

All attendees will be adults so no need to worry about children running around.

Wide Nick flask of grilled bacon, pre-buttered soft rolls for bacon rolls.

A festive soft drink. Adding some cranberry juice makes anything look more festive.

Another flask of coffee and a hip flask of brandy, pour a toy into the hot drink for adults. I don't drink much but a teaspoon of brandy lifts a hot drink when outside.

Or a flask of hot lemon and honey with a rum or brandy shot.

Bar plain chocolate.

Got to be some compensations to bring an adult.

GnomeDePlume · 19/12/2021 17:53

Bacon rolls also an excellent idea.

I too would go soup, hot rolls, ask all adults to bring their own cups etc to reduce your mum having to anything. And maybe a hot whiskey?

Had anyone a camping stove? Could be useful to keep things work / add a festive feel with a mulled wine for example

GnomeDePlume · 20/12/2021 10:39

The plan is for late afternoon/early evening. Probably no alcohol as DM & DB wont be drinking & others will be driving. We did this last year when the rule of six applied and DM rather enjoyed it. Festive and not too tiring for her.

Good idea about the camping stove. I think DSiL may have one.

Fish & chips if there is a shop nearby?

Other picnic items…
Fingers of cheese wrapped in Parma ham (available ready made now)
Hard boiled eggs
Chicken drumsticks
Wraps filled with chicken Caesar salad, or duck & hoisin cucumber spring onions.
Scotch eggs, the ultimate transportable picnic food!

GnomeDePlume · 20/12/2021 15:33

The duck wraps sound like a good idea. Unfortunately eggs and I dont get on so they wont be on the list.

DH has rejected soup. So far we are looking at sausage rolls (DD makes these and they are truly wonderful), bacon in bread rolls and mince pies. I will look at something chocolatey as well.

Hope it goes well @GnomeDePlume

Perhaps a touch of mustard, or at least ML

😀

GnomeDePlume · 20/12/2021 21:13

Thank you @FinallyHere I will leave DH in charge of condiments!
