Usually we have our adult children and partners with us for food on Christmas Eve, after which they head to the pub. Usually hot pork baguettes or pulled pork rolls with coleslaw and sweet potato fries.
This year there will just be the two of us, the family will join us on Christmas Day.
Don't want to do the pork dishes.

I'm mulling over what to have and thought I'd pop thoughts on here as MN always comes up with great ideas and am sure other people will benefit.

Don't want it to be too heavy, so have ruled out going for a curry/takeaway. Want it to be quick to make, don't want something as heavy as steak.
Fish would be light but have had a lot of fish recently and it's in plan for NYE so maybe not fish.
Was thinking of a grazing board but DH didn't seem that enthusiastic.
He'd be happy with pizza, I haven't ruled it out but would like it to be a bit more special.
Something like spaghetti carbonara ticks a lot of the boxes, it's not particularly special but is tasty, quick and we've not had it for a while. Seafood paella would have been perfect but we had that last night (duh!) and don't want to repeat too soon.

Any suggestions welcome, thank you

We’re having champagne and a Camembert baked inside a boule loaf, studded with garlic and thyme and drizzled with honey (or I’ll spread cranberry sauce onto the cavity in the bread before inserting the cheese, haven’t decided yet). Walnuts and cranberries on the side, along with grissini, olives, and figs. Maybe some salami too.

*dried cranberries, that is

I don't know if it's particularly special but we're having loaded nachos. Will top with leftover chilli from the freezer, jalapeños, chopped spring onions and some coriander then topped off with some cheese melted under the grill. Served with homemade guacamole, salsa and sour cream. I suppose it's not that quick if you don't happen to have some leftover chilli.

Lovely ideas thank you, all right up my street.

For 'special' read 'something we don't have very often' rather than haute cuisine. so loaded nachos fit the bill as it's not something we'd usually have - but I love them.

We have champagne and a seafood platter from M&S or potted shrimps with lovely breads.

littlebilliie · 18/12/2021 07:31

We are having a fish platter

Fivemoreminutes1 · 18/12/2021 12:58

We’re having either cauliflower cheese or spiced parsnip soup with star-shaped croutons, followed by warm mince pies and cream!
If we didn’t have the dc with us, I’d probably do fancy mushrooms on toast www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/mushrooms-toast

Im going to do chestnut, sage and pancetta tagliatelle. It’s not too heavy, low effort but feels quite festive with the chestnuts. Plus we don’t have it very often so will feel more special than the pasta dishes we roll out week after week!

More lovely ideas, and a nice meal plan coming together for between Christmas and NY too, thank you.

There's a lovely sounding recipe in today's Guardian Feast mag for cabbage leaves stuffed with rice and minced pork. That will feature at some point over the festive season as it sounds quite light.

Champagne and a seafood platter here.

We have ordered from https://www.thefishsociety.co.uk so it's all ready in the freezer just waiting for the festivities to kick off.

We used to get a ready made platter but now just buy exactly what we like best.

HollyandIvyandAllThingsYule · 18/12/2021 15:04

Champagne and seafood sounds glorious.

Fish/seafood already features quite heavily in our Christmas feasting (I’m Danish and I’ve brought that with me from home) but if it didn’t I’d definitely want that on Christmas Eve!

ToffeeNotCoffee · 18/12/2021 15:45

Roast gammon, leeks in cheese sauce, carrots, tender stem broccoli, sugar snap peas. New potatoes. More cheese sauce.

Champagne to drink.

Raspberry pavlova for dessert. No, I won't be making it !

Peckhampalace · 18/12/2021 16:17

Stuffed mushrooms with hassle back potatoes and veg for main here to make a change from the fish we usually have Christmas Eve.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 18/12/2021 16:38

I'm going to gatecrash at @Fivemoreminutes1 ' house.

We're doing Christmas dinner on Christmas eve this year. Christmas day will be just 2 of us and we're having all the cheese, including baked camembert. Pickles, bread, crackers, veggie sausage rolls, grapes, etc.

Laska2Meryls · 18/12/2021 16:44

We are having Clarissa Dixon Wright's Pheasant with Tagliatelle and Horseradish cream ... Its easy and festive... I usually serve it with a green salad
