You need to not go cheap here, or it just is lumpy and watery! Yuck!! My favourite is Miles (Porlock, Somerset) hot chocolate made with milk, but it's still delicious with water. It is absolutely the best!!!

I am a big fan of the Hotel Chocolat velevetiser, I absolutely adore mine. But I appreciate that they are not for everyone - expensive, yet another kitchen appliance…

Pre-velevetiser I was loyal to Cadburys hot chocolate powder, the one in the purple tub. A heaped tablespoon of the powder in the mug, fill with milk then microwave. I stopped half way and stirred, then stirred again at the end, didn’t come out lumpy for me ever. I stir quite vigorously.

I am personally very much against watery hot chocolate (why even bother) but on the rare occasion I made one, add the powder to a mug then a small amount of boiling water, mix this into a paste, then top up with more water, the paste emulsified into water much better than just the powder.

I get lovely hot frothy chocolate even with the cheap or low calorie instant hot chocolate by putting an extra spoonful of powder than recommended, then mixing the powder really well with some milk until a paste, then adding the boiling water.

Thanks for the tips! Can't afford a velvetiser. Going for a milk frother instead.
And never buying aero hot chocolate again!

Or do what my mum does and put it in the blender 😀 with cream and real melted chocolate too

Or do it like the Italians and put some cornflour in
Turns out like chocolate soup

I grate dark chocolate from aldi basics add hot frothy milk plus squirty cream and marshmallows

Mrspimplepopper · 16/12/2021 21:10

Yuck aero hot chocolate is the worst, like drinking a mug of bubbly saliva.

I love the Cadbury one in the purple tub, never goes lumpy.

Blinkinname · 16/12/2021 21:10

Just use cocoa powder and sugar OR real grated great quality chocolate - both with hot milk. 99% of 'hot chocolate ' powders pre mixed in the supermarket are full of shit - stabilisers and starch and shit

DobbyTheHouseElk · 16/12/2021 21:10

Sainsburys Basics hot chocolate is really yummy. I tried it because the reviews were so good. It’s our favourite. It dissolves well, tastes good.

If you're using powder you need to add a very small amount of milk to it at first - maybe a tbsp - then mix it well to make a paste, then add milk a little at a time. A bit like adding the milk to a roux. Then microwave. No lumps, ever.

Etherealhedgehog · 16/12/2021 21:55

I use cocoa powder - add a small amount of boiling water first, stir to a paste (no lumps!) then add hot milk. Sugar to taste. Done!

Velvetiser Velvetiser Velvetiser

Or... buy Spanish hot chocolate. You can get it online. Lovely and thick.

As I never drink tea or coffee, I'm a total hot chocolate fiend. My favourite is Lindt sea salt milk chocolate grated and frothed up in the Velvetiser. Second to this would be a dark chocolate with orange. Whipped cream on top of course.

Nutella also works amazingly well. Very creamy.

Snap, DC like the Lindt hot chocolate powder.
