Looking to treat myself to a new cookbook, while I am off work due to cancer treatment. I can still cook on my good days, so want to treat myself to a new book. Nothing too taxing or that needs too many special ingredients though!

Thank you

The ones I use the most often are Jamie's 15 Minute Meals and the excitingly titled Potatoes and Rice www.amazon.co.uk/Potatoes-Rice-Simple-Cookery-S/dp/1903817021?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

nongnangning · 16/12/2021 22:23

Another vote for Made In India by Meera Sodha. Really great simple tasty curries

Sammysquiz · 17/12/2021 08:35

Mine is Leiths Simple Cookery. A big bible of a book, with hundreds of fantastic recipes in it.

SimonedeBeauvoirscat · 17/12/2021 08:55

For day to day inspo I like Real Fast Food by Nigel Slater. It’s more of a kind of collection of suggestions of things to eat rather than formal recipes. Really useful for those days when you can’t think of anything other than pasta!

I also really like Tamasin’s Kitchen Bible by Tamasin Day-Lewis, for more formal cooking ideas. I found her Christmas Day menu walk-through very helpful when I was first in charge of the kitchen on Christmas Day!

Mufflette · 17/12/2021 09:00

Nigella's Kitchen for me. Recently I've been borrowing cookbooks from the library as a bit of a try before you buy - might be an idea for some of the ones you like the sound of but don't want to spend £s on unless they're right for you!

WeeFae · 17/12/2021 09:28

Great idea @Mufflette, I don't know why I didn't think to do that! I'll send DH though, as I probably shouldn't be visiting the library just now.

Thanks for all the great ideas!

15 minutes my arse!

RampantIvy · 17/12/2021 10:20

Anything by Delia Smith or Mary Berry. I also love my Jamie Oliver books and Nadiya Hussein's British Food Adventures.

FragrantVagrant · 17/12/2021 10:22

I have several ones I use often including Saturday Kitchen and the Quick Roasting Tin but the ones that gave me most of my day-to-day recipes are those small BBCGoodfood ones!

I have made every single cake from this book to take into work, no kidding, i work for the nhs. Really easy recipes, I replace all the sour creams and buttermilks with yoghurt and they always work out well. Honestly its brilliant.

@GrumpyLivesInMyHouseNow

My Nan bought me the 'good house keeping cook book' when I get engaged in 1997. I use it most weeks, it's great for good, no fuss, standard recipes.
This is probably my most used cookbook too.
Bohemond · 17/12/2021 19:13

Jamie at Home. Best recipes for roast lamb, courgette carbonara and chicken Caesar salad.

Titsywoo · 17/12/2021 19:19

Honestly it is a Sainsburys cook book from years ago. Lots of simple stuff like lasagne, cottage pie and tomato soup but the food is always delicious and simple to cook. The spaghetti carbonara recipe in it is really good.

I have way too many cookbooks! My absolute favourites are any by Nigel Slater or Nigella Lawson, their writing is just so lovely. There is also a book called life kitchen I think which is made especially for people struggling to enjoy food due to chemo if that ends up being relevant.

I get loads of books from the library, I have an app that I can reserve books on then I get an email when they’re ready to collect. I wish you all the best with your treatment.

1frenchfoodie · 19/12/2021 18:37

I love Diana Henry books - in a 200+ cookbook collection I turn to them regularly. Roast Figs Sugar Snow is perfect for this time of year, assumming you are fine with lots of butter, cheese and cream.

You can browse the indexes of cookbooks on the Eatyourbooks.com website to get a better feel.

Hope the treatment is going okay.

SFisnotsimple · 19/12/2021 18:47

My most used are
Made in India - Meera Sodha
Every day - HF-W
and Sainsbury's magazine! About 50% of the recipes I do come from there

I love the Wagamama book but the ingredients list is insane

15 minutes my arse!

This is true, but they are still easy and tasty!

I agree with Nigella's Feast, I like most of her early books but I think this is my favourite, it's really nice to dip in and out of and has cuisine from all over the world.
Also I like Nigel Slater's Christmas Chronicles, more for the style of writing and ideas than one specific recipe, but it's especially good for puddings and I love his cake decoration ideas.

WeeFae · 04/01/2022 10:50

I ended up buying quite a few, just waiting for them to arrive now!

Probably a bit late now but Awesomebooks is great for secondhand cookbooks if you fall in love with any new authors. You can set a wishlist of those you are looking out for. I do it to reduce the impact of my cookbook addiction.

I hope you find some gems in your purchases.

Nopetryagain · 04/01/2022 11:18

Diana Henry is my favourite cookery writer, her Simple, From Oven to the Table and Bird In the Hand (dedicated to chicken) are all fantastic

1frenchfoodie · 04/01/2022 12:02

Snap. If you dont already have them too I can also really recommend ‘Roast figs, sugar snow’ and ‘Crazy water, pickled lemons’ @Nopetryagain

WeeFae · 04/01/2022 12:10

Oh, Simple is 99p on kindle, thank you.

The most used in my house are

Good Housekeeping - for finding out how to do anything/timings etc
Leith's Seasonal - lots of recipes from elaborate to very simple
Delia's Summer and Winter collections - straightforward good food.

Nopetryagain · 04/01/2022 21:16

@1frenchfoodie thanks I will seek those out!
