On my own having a vegetarian xmas

So, being on my own is not a problem its the 2nd year due to covid but I do like xmas food.
I've been watching food programmes on tv and reading vegetarian xmas food magazines but the mixtures of ingredients are bizarre.
I hate anything with sweet ingredients like cranberry in, then there is the obligatory squash which I also dislike both the taste and the texture, anything wellington no thanks.
Marco Pierre White did a spread in the mail magazine (my neighbour came over with it) it was dire.
And whole roast cauliflower is most definitely a big NO - everyone seems to be doing that this year. I can't possible imagine anything more of a let down.
Looks like nut roast again, I do love nut roast with all the usual xmas fare and bread sauce.

I made this a couple of years ago, but with real cheese instead of violife. I thought it was great, and no squash or cranberries in sight!

Maybe you could focus on what you do like, rather than what you don't like...

Does "no wellington" mean "no pastry"? Because I love a pie & gravy for Christmas... Do you want a roast? You could do all the trimmings - red cabbage, cauli cheese, roasties, stuffing, bread sauce, maybe yorkshires - with no "main"? If not then you could do something decadent like a baked brie and eat the whole thing yourself with some buffet-type foods.

Or if you love nut roast then... why would you not have that?

SummaLuvin · 14/12/2021 20:20

this is amazing if you like mushrooms www.greatbritishchefs.com/recipes/mushroom-cobbler-recipe

KittenKong · 14/12/2021 20:26

Try veggie haggis with all the usual veggies. I really enjoy it and the carnivores tend to have salmon here for chrimbo.

Sunshineandrainbow · 14/12/2021 20:29

Do you like the Linda McCartney. Vege chicken roast?

KittenKong · 14/12/2021 20:36

Just don’t ever ever EVER try Tofurkey. We tried it for Christmas about 5 or 6 years ago and I swear I can still taste it when I burp.

It was nasty.

MilduraS · 14/12/2021 20:37

Do you really want a centrepiece? My veggie Christmas dinner consists of roast potatoes, roast carrots, potato croquettes, broccoli cheese and green beans cooked down in butter and garlic. Basically just my favourite bits and a day off from caring if I'm eating a balanced meal. The few times I've eaten at other peoples houses I've been secretly disappointed to see a veggie centrepiece. Less room on my plate for my favourite broccoli cheese.

KittenKong · 14/12/2021 20:40

I love broccoli cheese yum yum. I smear a wee bit of red pesto on the bottom of broccoli or cauliflower cheese before cooking and it all
bubbles up and is mmmmmmm.

HeyMicky · 14/12/2021 20:51

Onion tart tatin? Mushroom galette?

The food writer Diana Henry is doing some lovely veg recipes on her Instagram

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 14/12/2021 21:08

I would eat macaroni cheese everyday but I'm not doing that Grin yes some of those look very nice I will have a look at the recipes. Thanks.
I could have nut roast but I feel I should expand my horizons - I am not a very good cook but like to make the effort now and again.

When I want a quick veggie roast I just add some cauldron sausages to the sides

GoldenFondue · 16/12/2021 00:17

I love the Linda McCartney vegetarian chicken pieces. I'd have a pile of them or the chicken roast they do if it's similar. I'd have it with cauliflower cheese, yorkies, roast tatties and loads of gravy. Ooh and some asparagus grilled in olive oil and salt and pepper.

Arethechildreninbedyet · 16/12/2021 00:19

Every supermarket have a lovely looking Wellington or faux meat roast

We’re having the asda turkey crown this weekend and the Tesco beef Wellington on Christmas Day!

caringcarer · 16/12/2021 00:53

My dh is veggie and every Xmas he makes a lentil loaf and tiramasu.

midsomermurderess · 16/12/2021 05:11

It's not very Christmassy but it's blooming tasty www.deliaonline.com/recipes/type-of-dish/curries/egg-and-lentil-curry-with-coconut-and-pickled-lime

TalkedTooMuchStayedTooLong · 16/12/2021 05:50

@midsomermurderess ... I'm not vegetarian, but I love that recipe!

LiterallyKnowsBest · 16/12/2021 06:15

Must say I never understand the necessity for ‘made-up’ vegetarian dishes. I like vegetables, I like beans and pulses, I’m a bit off fish - normally pescetarian, and am trying to avoid stuffing my face 24 hrs a day with bread and cheese.

I’ve ordered half of Hodmedod and several additional acres of mushrooms with my Riverford orders - and plan to do as little as possible to everything that arrives. Wine, Christmas cake. It’ll be grand.

Never eaten a nut roast in my life, though …

JingsMahBucket · 17/12/2021 06:36

@SummaLuvin thanks for that mushroom cobbler recipe. I’ve been craving mushrooms lately.

JuniorMint · 17/12/2021 06:46

I’m having cheese soufflé with all the veg on the side including my favourite; creamed leeks. I don’t like gravy, even veggie gravy.

NdujaWannaDance · 17/12/2021 06:57

Well there you are, then. Sorted. You don't seem to like most of the other vegetarian fallbacks with a vaguely wintery/Christmas feel about them, so there's not much left to choose from, is there?

There was a whole huge thread about this a while ago and so many veggies were moaning about being served a nut roast as apparently it's an outdated, boring 70's cliche.

But when faced with the great long list of all the other things the veggies definitely didn't want to eat either, it was a bit of a depressing prospect for any poor sod tasked with catering for them.

I suspect you were one of the ones giving us great long lists of all the things you didn't want to be served. It was 'Urrgh God no, please not lentils/beetroot/mushrooms/cauliflower//risotto/squash/anything with pastry/anything with beans.'

So pretty soon you come full circle and nut roast it is.

🤣🤣🤣 I've just sat here for a minute trying to work out how to pronounce it without swearing.
