Lebanese panini.. what would it consist of?!

Morning to all you wonderous folk :)

Seeking a little advice. My OH has fallen in love with a panini! We used to frequent a cafe in Marlow which had a Lebanese panini on their menu, which he found rather delicious. Being as I'm more of a bacon butty/ tea cake and a cuppa lass, I'm afraid I never really paid much attention to what was in it. What I do know is that they now don't do said panini.

I've tried looking up their old menu online, to no avail. So I've come to pick your knowledgeable brains if you please... any suggestions on what may constitute a sarnie labelled only as 'Lebanese'?

I've bought the lad a panini maker for his birthday, and would love to be able to try and recreate it for him (likely with disastrous results, but hey! They say it's the thought that counts.)

Falafel, sliced in half
Bit of hummus (the nice stuff with tahini in it - Sabra brand is good)
Some lettuce, thinly sliced tomato
Maybe a few slices of gherkin

Yummy!

Well it sounds like he ate enough of them. What does he think might have been in it!?

Like... even just a basic, some sort of roast veg and some cheese would help us narrow it down a bit more Grin

Wait a minute - I'm vegan. Maybe add some roasted chicken to the above for your DH Grin

You could email the place and ask?

JuneOsborne · 07/12/2021 07:15

Halloumi, Baba ganoush, pickles.

JuneOsborne · 07/12/2021 07:18

These are the wraps a local Lebanese place does...

I am totally in love with a Lebanese dip called muhammara, made of roasted red peppers, ground walnuts, and pomegranate molasses. Put some of that in a panini with slices of griddled halloumi and some salad and it would be the best thing in the world.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 07/12/2021 07:28

Roast aubergine, Harrissa paste, pomegranate, halloumi, humous?

kwaziseyepatch · 07/12/2021 07:36

Chicken shawarma, tahini sauce, salad, sometimes French fries. Panini obviously not Middle Eastern but Middle Eastern wraps often contain this

Beautiful, I feel I've had my 'Little Englander' eyes opened somewhat this morning, all those combos sound fascinating and honestly, pretty delicious! Thanks to all. Now for some kitchen experiments!

Yes but that would involve hearing the hummus and lettuce, which would be a bit gross
Hoppinggreen · 07/12/2021 19:23

Heating it I mean

Immunetypegoblin · 07/12/2021 19:52

That's your opinion Grin I have had slightly heated both many times in fast food places (in wraps) and consider them lush.

MilduraS · 07/12/2021 19:56

Hummous is traditionally served warm so not so odd. Warm grilled lettuce is a current trend in salads too.

RuleOfCat · 07/12/2021 19:58

What would be very typically Lebanese - even more so than hummous - is za'atar manouche. It's a flatbread covered in a herby mixture. It's just about the cheapest streetfood in Lebanon, but very yummy. So maybe the panini contained za'atar (possibly with other ingredients too, the za'atar is something of a base, like tomato sauce on a pizza.

Oh, thanks for that, it sounds amazing! I really believe that if I had to eat one ‘type’ of food for the rest of my life, it’ll have to be Lebanese. I think Lebanon has it very hard these days :(
RuleOfCat · 07/12/2021 20:23

I would agree on both counts, Buddha - Lebanon has amazing food (and the people have a passion for eating well) but things are tough for just about everyone there right now. The financial crisis, political uncertainty, that dreadful explosion...
Back to the za'atar, I'm pretty sure you can buy containers of pre-mixed za'atar herbs in the UK.

I agree it is probably me. I struggle with hot things that are normally cold and cold things that are normally hot. Warm lettuce makes me feel a bit queasy
BuddhaAtSea · 07/12/2021 23:14

@RuleOfCat I use sumac all the time, got plenty of sesame seeds and oregano and thyme, I’ll try and make my own.
Do you have a good falafel recipe?
