ds is capable of it if pushed but it is much easier to do it for him.

Does yours,or is mine a particularly lazy bugger?

depends what the food is

roast dinner - I still cut up his meat otherwise he is daunted by the size & wont eat anything

otherwise I let him try & if he gets stuck, I help him

they get the hang of it eventually - I wouldnt worry

for me, Id rather he ate the food that Ive cut up than not eat

my 6 yo hates cutting his food and would much prefer to pick it up with his fingers rather than use a knife.

We encourage him cutting it up as much as possible but he'll still try and sneak a whole roast potato in his fingers.

throckenholt · 17/12/2007 07:46

no - I do it because it is quicker and less messy - really should start encouraging them to do it for themselves.

Ds is 3.10 and doesn't seem to want to do it at home.
But nursery tell me that all the under 4's - yes, ALL of them, happily eat with a knife and a fork. And that ds can cut up soft potatoes, and veg, struggles with things like sausages.
This totally opened my eyes, and I realised that he'd been pulling a 'fast one' at home.
We haven't made a big deal of it, but the point is that dh and I now know that he can do it.

ChopsterRoastingOnAnOpenFire · 17/12/2007 08:32

I think it varies a lot. dd and dt1 did it really early - dt1 is 2.5 and can use a knife and fork. dt2 is nowhere near and ds1 still struggles at 5 yo.

DS is 6 and he tries but I usually do it. I'm sure he'll learn before university! Like I am sure he will stop sleeping in my bed before then!

AMerryScot · 17/12/2007 09:02

Mine has no trouble cutting food.

ChasingSquirrelsUpTheXmasTree · 17/12/2007 09:15

ds (5.3y) does his own - the only thing he might struggle with is roast beef, but even that goes on his plate as it comes and he tries to cut it - and only gets help if he really needs it.
I also have a 23mo and am pretty sure that d1 was cutting his own food well before ds2 was on solids - so at least a year ago.

nannyL · 17/12/2007 10:09

my (nearly) 5 year old charge can cut up fishfingers / salmon fillets and other very soft things...

generally i do it for him, especially meat / chicken

Hulababy · 17/12/2007 10:13

Depends on what we are having. If it is something a bit firmer to cut - like steak or a chop - then I will give her a hand. I know school give them a hand if they are struggling to.

ggirlsbells · 17/12/2007 10:15

I know ds can do it.

Dab hand with a knife actually.

But he creates such a farkin fuss about it,he perfers eating with his bloody hands.

He is so uncouth.

Our ds 5.2yo is still given a hand cutting his meat - other stuff he can do himself or he uses his fingers, so ggirlsbells he's uncouth too School help if he needs it but you can tell they expect him to do it himself by now!
