Hi, I'm looking for some recipies/ideas for Christmas eve. May be fish/ meat? I'm very interested in starters and mains. Could you please help?

We always have Fish on Christmas Eve - I think this is traditional and does mean it's a light meal before the heaviness of Christmas Day!

Suggestions: salmon en croute, gravadlax, sea bass with lemon, wilted spinach, new potatoes.

Thank you, Weegle.

I make a big fish pie, white fish, smoked Haddock, creamy white sauce with parsley topped with mashed potato.

Served with (not very festive this but we all love it.......cabbage!).

Its just DH, me and the kids so we don't bother with a starter but if friends were coming over, I'd just do a very simple starter like a feta and tomato crostini or a fruit platter.

I like to do a ham on Christmas Eve so I can have it with the turkey therefater, but for various reasons (chiefly that I'm catering for the masses for about 10 days from the 25th onwards, we'll probably have pasta or pizza on Christmas Eve this year! I know ds and the dc won't even notice!)

I'm thinking of may be smocked salmon for starter, trout for mains and trifle for pudding. How does it sound?

I'd do:

smoked salmon with very thinely sliced cucumber & cream ( flavor with horseradish & chives or dill & pepper)
Served with buckwheat pancakes (google them, dead easy) and lemon wedges.

Trout baked in foil with a big bowl of salsa verde relish (chopped onion/capers/parsley/oil and vinegar) with warm minted new potatoes and side salad of lettuce in fresh garlic vinaigrette and pine nuts.

IMO triffle is a meal on it's own.
I like light desserts.

Oranges are nice and seasonal. You can slice them, sprinkle with sugar and cinamon and grill and serve with custard.

What a fantastic idea! Thank you.
