clever food people - how do I put gold leaf on a chocolate cake?

I am making a chocolate chestnut cake (hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall) for a family gathering. It is like a torte kind of thing - you don;t ice it. To make it a little more festive I decided to put little bits of gold leaf on it so got some from the cake shop.

How do I go from cake and piece of paper with gold leaf to a lovely festive chocolate and gold speckled spectacle?

put the gold leaf gold-side down on the cake and rub gently with your fingers - it should stick to the cake - then gently peel off the paper, kind of like a transfer.

I don't know how firm the cake is though - be careful not to stick your fingers right through it....

that I don't know - I've only ever done it on an uneven surface where it flecked naturally by only sticking to the high bits...
