Gotta be prawn cocktail and brown bread.

foofi · 15/12/2007 22:52

I have never in my life had a starter on Christmas day. There's too much food.

Krimble · 15/12/2007 22:53

Not decided but could be

Pate with oatcakes and chutney.
or
Tomato tartlets.

Not sure yet.

I just serve a normal human sized main course of chicken and the usual stuff.

What ever you go for make it very simple and preferably something you can plate up before and doesn't take up room in the oven.

Always had a starter, mum always did veg soup.

imdreamingofawhiteKITTYmas · 15/12/2007 22:58

Am I the only one who has homemade soup then, loads of veggies and lentils but it's kind of served about 12 you need to be starving to enjoy Christmas dinner.

TheQueenSPeach · 15/12/2007 22:59

We always had a starter - usually kitsch prawn cocktail served without the irony.
When I finally get to do Christmas in my own house, we won't be having starters. I don't see the point, it's a family meal not a poncey showing off opportunity.

No my mums veg soup was homemade and FIL likes to do a stilton and broccli, Good choice as soup can be preprepared and heated on the hob when required.

My starter will be a small affair to keep them at the table then I dish up the veg and FIL will carve the chicken.

LOL MIL likes to do prawn cocktails and stunk out my fridge for months when they leaked everywhere. I don't see starters as poncey, normal for a big meal for us.

ever gone into the ridiculaous portions some go for with the main course anyway.

MerryPIFFLEmas · 15/12/2007 23:07

antipasti
bruschetta
and everything else from Waitroses antipasti line

murphyslaw · 16/12/2007 15:53

Rachel allens Cream of Broccolli soup with parmesan toasts. The amazing thing is you can make it ahead and pop it in the freezer. Mine is sitting there waiting for me - yummy!

We usually have prawn cocktail too. Melon for those who don't eat prawns.

I keep trying to persuade them all that a sit down starter is not necessary and makes things more complicated for my Dad who is doing most of the cooking but I get over-ruled. May manage to change things this year though - we normally eat around 3 but this year DSis's DF has his DS from 2 to 4 so that alters our timing a bit - I may suggest we do the starter around 1 and then have dinner at around 4.30 or so.

Usually retro prawn cocktail as kids love it but this year, a very easy (bought) blinis, soured cream and smoked salmon canape type thing with a plate of anti-pasti about an hour before lunch at 2ish. Hate xmas pud but will be making sherry trifle
