for the unlazy, pinhead oatmeal even better.Soak it overnight.

I could go on and on about porridge, Used to have a friend who stirred peanut butter and weetabix into hers. That was a bit much for me but I have been known to stir a teaspoonful of tahini into it, and that's lovely. It is also very good as a meaty thing... on the morning of 1st january 2000 I saw in the millenium with porridge with bacon and mushrooms stirred in. (needless to say I had a hangover)...it was exquisite. yes I have read thomcat's menu from fat duck, yes I do like the sound of snail porridge!

do you know the one thing I cannot abide in porridge is yoghurt, suzywong? how do you make it nice? does it not not go all curdly?

enough from me about porridge.

Mummymonster · 14/11/2004 14:14

confession time now

As a kid my mum (who can't cook to save her life) did it with water and sugar.

I used to spread it on white toast! That made it yummy

suzywong · 14/11/2004 14:19

spots you are clearly a freak (mushrooms???)

Never had a curdling issue

MummyMonster, glad to see you have not passed on the family tradition

Mummymonster · 14/11/2004 18:55

Suzy W......I learned to cook out of self defence!

unicorn · 14/11/2004 19:01

I reckon it is a really hearty breakfast but how do you make it yummy for the kids without sticking jamhoneysugar etc in it?

spots · 14/11/2004 19:26

Scottish method for porridge puritans: pinhead oatmeal soaked overnight, water to cook with, salt only. Grannies dip each spoonful in separate cup of milk to cool; v. delicate. Ploughboys (there are lots of them in the inner cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow) pour remaining porridge into a drawer where it sets and is cut into slices for taking cold into the fields. Or more probably their mothers do it for them. (see separate thread: Splinters In my Boy's Porridge from ploughboysmum).

Make mine with water, then add sugar and cold milk. Lovely - have it everyday. Oh I forgot 2 spoonfuls of bran too.

throckenholt · 15/11/2004 09:07

I like it with cooked with milk, then mash in a banana and a big spoonful of plain yoghurt .

Lidl oats are the nicest as well.
