Raising bread in cool kitchen

I searched for ways to raise bread in a cool house and found a way that worked well.Use your picnic cool box. Place a container of boiling water on a mat in the box, place the loaf tin or supported tray in there too .Close the lid tightly and in an hour your dough will have risen.

I also have no airing cupboard and a cold cool kitchen. I tend to put the oven on for a bit to make it warmish and out the dough in there. Or on the table by the radiator.

Never thought of a cool bag. I wonder if one of those clickable hand warmers would work? They're smaller than the water.

Mind you, I usually make rolls which wouldn't fit in my cool bag anyway!

True it cab even rise in the fridge but not usually spare apace on fridge shelves. I have left it overnight before but it didn't actually double in size and become fluffy. I liked the results in the cool box so shall repeat it but thanks for the replies,

Luckily I have an airing cupboard but in the summer when I don't put the heating on I prove my bread in the greenhouse.

It goes a bit stiff in the fridge so you have to wait a while for it to warm up, which isn’t necessarily convenient. I did manage to save my dough by putting it in the car overnight when we had a power cut once.

I do mine in the sink in the utility room. Run a few inches of warm water in the sink and put an upturned washing up bowl in the sink. Rest the tray and dough on top of the bowl. Cover (with cling film if you really need to turbo charge it )

I use the oven. If the kitchen’s cold, I either turn the oven on for a minute, turn the oven light on or put in a roasting tray of boiling water (seems to work best because of the steam). If the kitchen’s too hot, or I want to slow things down a bit, I put in some ice packs from the freezer. Don’t have a problem then with the dough becoming stiff from being in the fridge. And I never have enough space in my fridge anyway.

Slow cooker, switched off, or south facing window, covering bowl with cling film and a tea towel.
