Help! I have 2 primary school boys who are constantly hungry, I try and give them healthy, nutritious snacks, but it gets expensive. Any suggestions would be great, thanks!

Carrots with humus dip
Crackers with cottage cheese and a slice of cucumber
A boiled egg

EnidFrighten · 12/11/2021 11:22

What do you give them now?

Mine have oatcakes, corncakes, rice cakes, carrots, cucumber, bits of cheese or a few bits, apples

If I'm feeling fancy then pancakes

I make savoury flapjacks which are packed with oats, cheese and veggies so healthy, delicious and filling.

WhatonEarth1 · 12/11/2021 18:07

Toast with peanut butter and sliced banana
Scrambled egg on toast
A mini tin of baked beans on toast (each tin is one portion of their 5 a day)
A bowl of cereal
Cuppa porridge

Apple and nut butter

Undertheoldlindentree · 12/11/2021 18:26

Home made popcorn

Wraps spread with peanut butter, apple slices and a few shavings from a block of chopped dates. Roll up. Quick and delicious!

Home made muffins - Google Susan Reimer banana muffins. Add oats, chocolate chip or raisin. Reduce sugar by 1/3.

Breadsticks and supermarket version of philadelphia

Mini frittatas - just make up the mix for a big one and then cook in a muffin tray. You can freeze them as well so can be useful for packed lunches as they'll defrost in a lunchbox overnight.

Is the basic recipe I use but it's very adaptable. Last time I made it with leeks as the vegetable element and substituted nuts for more seeds so DD could take it to nursery. It also freezes well :)

@daisychainsandrainbows thank you!!! We're a nut allergy house so thanks for the tip!,

Honestly, unless your dc are underweight they really don’t need snacks, regardless of how healthy they are.

I really don’t understand the British obsession with giving kids snacks. If they are at school they’re having breakfast around 8, a snack at 10ish, lunch at 12ish, after school snack at 3:30ish, evening meal 5/6ish.

Literally no healthy child needs to eat every 2-3 hours.

If they desperately “need” to consume something try some herbal teas, usually by the time it’s cool enough to drink, they’ve forgotten they’ve asked for something.

PickleTheWonderCat · 15/11/2021 15:53

@PinkyU I can't think of a single child that would enjoy a herbal tea 😀

mowglika · 13/06/2022 15:21

Herbal tea 😂

Snoopsnoggysnog · 13/06/2022 15:27

I can’t think of a single child who isn’t hungry after school, or would enjoy herbal tea 🙄

I recently made fruit leathers. Bear snacks are about 80p each, but you can make your own very easily. get some cooking apples (often free if you know someone with a tree) and stew them up till they're mushy. spread them on a baking tray covered with baking paper. put in the oven on low (60 or 80 degrees) for a few hours until all the moisture has gone out. slice it up, you can roll it if you like. you can put in frozen fruit into the mixture but they're tasty on their own. I keep them in a plastic box in the fridge to be on the safe side, but as they're dried fruit they should keep almost indefinitely like raisins do. my daughter loves them

Fulbe · 13/06/2022 23:06

oh and you can make ice cream from bananas, it's a good way of using up over-ripe ones.
break them into small bits and freeze
put in food processor
it will chop them into small bits, then eventually make them into a smooth paste.
You can add yogurt, cocoa, vanilla essence if you like.
Best eaten immediately!
