My kids are ever so fussy and wont eat this and wont eat that and dinners consist of nuggets, smiley faces, peas carrots, mini sausages...not NORMAL ones etc etc..all the crap under the sun.
So feeling I now have the strenght to fight back against them(!) I am banning nuggetts after Xmas and each meal till then will have something new on the plate they have to try...or come 2005 they will be very hungry little girls.
Any ideas for simpleish things they might eat?
They both had a quarter of a vegetable pie this evening..

rice dishes, my dd's love korma. will pig out on that. takes about 30mins to make.

toad in the hole (sausgaes needed, but big ones!!) with mash and veggies. maybe onion gravy.

tammybear · 12/11/2004 20:47

lol charliecat, my dd has the same things. her favourite meal is nuggets and smiley faces. she has shepherds/cottage pie, and has started to go on lasagnes as well.

misdee · 12/11/2004 20:47

shepherds pie also goes down well. chicken legs instead of nuggets.

lavender2 · 12/11/2004 20:48

do you have any farmer's markets in your area....as have today bought ostrich burgers (4 for £3.00) very reasonable vegetables (baby leeks about 25 of them for 70p!!) with a bap and tomatoes....btw we stopped giving them chicken nuggets a long time ago......whatever you give them offer no alternatives!!!......have loads of simplish meals in mind, would you like some of these?

charliecat · 12/11/2004 20:50

Yes please lav...simple though my cooking skills are aimed at gas mark 6 and grill for 10 minutes

Charliecat, good luck with it. I've stopped buying this sort of crap (apart from oven chips, which I can justify as having a couple of times a month) and both mine are eating so much better.

How about pasta? There are so many different things you can put on it, and you don't have to feel it has to be a proper sauce - my two like it with butter on it, mixed with bits of chicken and bits of carrots or broccoli (or any other vegetable your children find acceptable!)

moomina · 12/11/2004 20:53

Just don't do what I did this evening and spend ages making a delicious, fresh, healthy, ORGANIC! chicken risotto, with cream, parmesan, yum yum yum - only to have it tipped on the floor within two minutes...

fairyfly · 12/11/2004 20:54

Stir fry veg and noodles, hummus and flat breads, fish and potatoes, fahitas, and the best and easiest green beans pesto and spaghetti

misdee · 12/11/2004 20:55

one of the girls in the caferteria at work used to make a goreous roasted veg pasta bake type dish. oh it was yummy. she was a vegetarian and oen day swopped all the meat sausages for veggie ones and hardly anyone noticed, or if they did, they didnt say a thing.

lavender2 · 12/11/2004 21:06

yummy recipe here...

boil some green vegetables ie. brocolli, courgettes or spring greens for 5 mins and set aside...

In a pan add a spoonful of marg/butter and 25g of plain flour. Cook for 1 minute, remove from the heat and gradually add 1/2 pint of vegetable stock.....stir until thickened....remove from the heat and add 150ml of double cream or Elmlea double cream...

Grease a dish, spread out the vegetables...add the white sauce...scatter over breadcrumbs, chopped up parsley and cheese...grate some cheese over the top and bake for 20 mins...tis gorgeous we had it yesterday with loin chops...enjoy!

Annabel Karmel does a brilliant chicken burger recipe, which contains..........da da Chicken no seriously.......chicken breast, leeks, onions, carrots, and apple if any one needs the recipe let me know. I bought AK, at weaning stage,,,, read it and then thought mmmmmmmmmmm, later dude later.... but now that we are entering the Fussy stage we find it invaluable

Demented · 12/11/2004 22:45

How about macaroni cheese, pasta with readymade tomato sauce, baked potato with butter, cheese, beans etc, pizza either with homemade or ready made base and just add whatever toppings your DDs like or eggy bread.

FWIW I think it's a good idea to cut out the nuggets, especially if they don't want to eat much else. All the best!

charliecat · 12/11/2004 22:54

I have managed to squeeze jacket potatos with various salad, egg, toppings into thier diet and its now just a case of slowly expanding on it.
With this threat of NO NUGGETTS...they will hopefully realise this isnt a choice thing...they will be left hungry when XY and Z is on the plate and theres not a nuggett in sight.
I have introduced DD1 to BM drummers saying its a bigger nuggett...and that in itself is an improvement.
DD2 was eating pure chicken and roast spuds at the weekend.
They can see im deadly serious about this...
Keep the meal ideas coming...

Oh a big pot of chilli or bolognaise always goes down well here or lentil soup.

mammya · 12/11/2004 22:57

Sorry if I'm repeating other people's suggestions, I haven't read the whole thread:

  • omelette
  • tortilla wraps with stir fried chicken (or leftovers from whole roast chicken), salad stuff, sour cream or plain yogurt etc
  • pasta with tomato sauce (home-made or bought)
  • home-made pizza (with home-made or bought base)
  • sausages and mash
  • tuna casserole with couscous or rice Personally I love casseroles, bang some meat/fish in a casserole dish, add some vegetables, herbs and spices to taste and liquid (stock or passata or both), stick in a low oven for 1 hour or more, and voila! Then just serve with pasta or rice or couscous. HTH

Good going CC -
Top meals chez Cardi:
3 Colour Pasta,Couscous, rice with tomato/veg sauces
Tinned peas & carrots as veg accompaniment to any meal or cucumber & small tomatoes
Soups, cheese & bread
Shepherds Pie with tomato sauce
Sarnies
Baked Beans, Egg & bread
Pizza (get kids to help make)
Yogurt for dessert

tigermoth · 13/11/2004 07:30

cc, I did that too. A few years ago I decided to more or less ban nuggets and the like at home. Once there were no more in the freezer, my nugget-crazed children soon stopped wanting them. Good luck!

My daughter, who is probably the fussiest 9 yr old in the world, likes
lentil soup,
sweet potato stew,
omelettes and sald,
veggie sausage casserole,
roast dinner without any meat (she especially likes parsnips),
noodles and stir fry,
korma,
wraps with cheese and sweetcorn- she also likes chicken nuggets but rarely gets them!
