She has always loved it and enjoys
mackerel on its own
with a snack platter ie fish cucumber raisins etc
on toast
in a sandwich
in a rice dish
with pasta/spaghetti
mixed with mash and peas
as fish cakes
the list goes on and on
I know about limiting salt but the packaging only says
mackerel 75% salt sunflower oil.

yikes, that's alot of salt, more salt than sunflower oil. Can you get it in another form like you can get tuna in Spring Water... Dunno about the actual mackrel though.

Have you looked at any other brands of tinned mackerel to see if the salt levels differ? I have only seen mackerel sold in oil in tins myself.

My DD1 was a total mackerel monster for her first 2 years - her fave was on toast mixed with chese and a little sweet chilli sauce. She suddenly grew out of it but she has now discovered the joys of picking her own fresh mackerel from the fish counter and taking it home and getting me to grill it for her. A bit more tricky than just tinned but at 80p per fish not bad value and no salt. DD2 loves it fresh too so smiles all round.

I get strong mackerel cravings with each pregnancy - wonder if that has something to do with why they love it so much (esp since when pregnant with DD2 it had to be fresh not tinned .

sorry I was wrong, just checked again
mackerel 75%
sunflower oil
salt.
no idea how much salt.
I would be interested to know. The other things are things like cooked prawns and sea food sticks

Pellmell - it is (I always nick a bit)

I just mix it all together, bung it on a piece of toast and toast it under the grill until the cheese has melted and holds it all together ...yum yum - of course, the cheese is going to increase your salt content but if it gets them eating oily fish and dairy produce I don't see it can be all that bad eh?
