Mushy defrosted strawberries

IAmFourEels · 02/11/2021 17:00

I have one punnet of once-frozen strawberries, now defrosted and very liquidy. Any suggestions on what I could do with them? Could I do a crumble, or cake, or would the extra liquid be too disastrous? Not really a fan of smoothies or jam, that's the problem!

Smoothie?

What do they taste like? If sour I’d use them in a curry - they pair really well with red chilli.

Chia pudding? Mush the strawberries completely and mix with a tablespoon of chia seeds, and leave in the fridge for a couple of hours.

@housecoat1968 - OP doesn't like smoothies! Grin

You could drain off extra liquid before adding to cakes / crumbles / muffins - or mash them up a bit more & stir them through the mix.

Add them to jelly or make a trifle.

Topping for a cheesecake.

Oooh, or use them to fill a strawberry shortcake. You'd squish them up for that anyway.

I bloody love strawberry shortcake.

Eat them with cream, like you would tinned strawberries.

I think I'd probably do a mushy version of an eton mess. Either as they are stirred through whipped cream and dolloped on meringues or I guess you could turn it into a bit of a coulis by cooking them down with some extra sugar, possibly a bit of booze or splash of balsamic vinegar, perhaps some fresh basil and then stirring THAT through whipped cream and put on meringues?

Or look up recipes for a sorbet/granita?

add them to porridge.
I like the chia pudding idea though.

Random but I find defrosted strawberries with the juice drained away make better fruit leather. I guess because you’ve already removed some of the liquid?

Strawberry fool? As in, Chuck in a blender with cream and a bit of sugar

Nigellas strawberry and vanilla crumble, she says it's ideal for less than perfect strawberries.

PurpleHydrangea1 · 02/11/2021 17:37

I often use defrosted strawberries in porridge.

PerseverancePays · 02/11/2021 17:41

Push them through a sieve, sweeten a bit and pour over ice cream or a sponge.

Crumble would work. Cool them with some Bramley apple, sugar to taste. Crumble on top and bake

Oops sorry!! 😂

Thanks for all the suggestions - it's reassuring to see that a crumble wouldn't be a total disaster! Think I'll try one of the crumble recipes then - either strawberry and apple or the Nigella Lawson suggestion.
