Food for convalescence?

KatyMac · 27/10/2021 17:40

I'm getting better from covid and can face food again - I have lost 5kgs!

I have some food issues and intolerances so they 'dippy egg' my mum would have suggested is out Grin

So what are the best foods for recovering?
Do different areas have specialties for sick people?

tempt me?

Fruit for vitamin c to help you recover
Soup for fluids and electrolytes
Nuts as a healthy way of getting extra calories

CalamariGames · 27/10/2021 17:55

Marmite toast is what we always have.

Georgyporky · 27/10/2021 17:56

Chicken soup cures everything - even if you're not Jewish !

KatyMac · 27/10/2021 17:57

Oo I could fancy some chicken soup

Off to read ingredients! Any good brands?

Back to your childhood, so basically stews, casseroles, home made soups, porridge, milk puddings, stewed fruit.

wildeatheart · 27/10/2021 17:59

The Yorkshire company chicken and veg soup (in the fresh isle) absolutely beautiful 😍

devildeepbluesea · 27/10/2021 17:59

Defo chicken soup
Pasta bake - nice and carby and full of calories
Corned beef hash with loads of grated, melted cheese on top

KittenKong · 27/10/2021 17:59

Rice pudding. Nothing like it!

AtleastitsnotMonday · 27/10/2021 19:14

What is it you can’t have?

KatyMac · 27/10/2021 20:59

@AtleastitsnotMonday mostly eggs, dairy, coconut, almond and soya but im not great with raw fruit & veg or pulses

So it can be fun!

Thanks everyone

We always go for homemade chicken soup and rice.

Sparkletastic · 27/10/2021 21:06

Rice
Chicken soup
Bananas
Multivitamin

saleorbouy · 27/10/2021 21:20

Tin of tomato soup with tin of chicken peas or butter beans. Blend and tin to normal consistency with milk or water.
More filling and loads of protein and fibre.
Nice bread with butter to go with it.

saleorbouy · 27/10/2021 21:20

Thin

saleorbouy · 27/10/2021 21:21

Tinned peaches and custard.

AdaColeman · 27/10/2021 21:28

I’d say you needed light, easy to digest foods, that looked tempting, so they would encourage you to eat.

I agree about soup, choose broths rather than heavy thick soups laden with beans & lentils. Consommé would be good, chicken or beef, serve it in a cup with toast fingers. Light tomato soup, chicken & vegetable broth, chicken noodle soup, asparagus soup.

Fish would be a good choice too, salmon fillets, lemon sole, plaice. Cook in foil parcels in the oven, or microwave with a splash of white wine, serve with asparagus tips or green beans or broccoli florets.

Chicken dishes such as chicken supreme with rice, roast chicken with garden vegetables, would also be good.

Get your best crockery out, spoil yourself with tea & cake in the afternoon, have a glass of wine with dinner. I hope you start to feel better very soon KatyMac! Thanks

KatyMac · 27/10/2021 22:37

Thanks @AdaColeman can I come and live at your house? That sounds perfect, however they are things I'd normally cook and I'm too knackered!

DH&DD are trying their best

I'll suggest some plaice for tomorrow

Another vote for the Yorkshire Provender Roast chicken and veg soup...it's gorgeous and covers all the food groups.

How about smoothies?

ODFOgrinch · 28/10/2021 11:17

Poached smoked haddock with bread.
If you could eat eggs I'd suggest poaching one alongside the fish in the smoky water. Delicious!

KatyMac · 28/10/2021 14:49

Oh I could fancy smoked haddock!

Still want soup tho'

DD brought me home a McDonald's apple pie last night, which while probably not nutritious was very tasty!

KatyMac · 28/10/2021 17:47

I have been served:
Bacon sandwich - the bacon was off
Beans on toast
Dry chicken sandwich

DD is working away and DH is trying, bless his heart

Shopping arrives tomorrow with some treats

Put a little tomato purée on the dry chicken. It will make a big difference in the absence of egg free Mayo.

www.google.com/amp/s/wtfdoieattonight.com/2018/11/07/diana-henrys-italian-penicillin-aka-orzo-with-lemon-parsley-and-parmesan/amp/

This is my go-to recipe when someone has been ill. Soupy but more substantial than that, very easy to eat.

KatyMac · 30/10/2021 23:31

Well I tried smoked haddock and it didn't work and tbh the chicken soup was awful!

I have now lost nearly 7kgsSad

& I am feeling sorry for myself

Maybe you could try some huel, meal replacement? While all the suggestions are amazing with DH struggling and your weight dropping this would give you at a least 400-800 calories of balanced food.

Then the rest you could make up with snacks, fruits, drinks etc?

Or I'd be buying vegan protein powders and making up lots of shakes with added bananas, ginger, coco and fruits.. not all in one! Just use the protein as a base and add flavours.
