What new meal do you want to try?

Is there a dish, or maybe a cuisine, that you’ve wanted to try for ages? And a separate question- although your answer might be the same- is what dish would you want to cook at home, but haven’t gotten round to making yet?

I really want to try a Korean army stew, it looks amazing. It seems easy enough to cook at home, but I’ve been put off because I need to buy the Gochujang paste! I feel that, generally, I want to eat more South Asian/South East Asian food.

Buy the Gochujang , it comes in handy for so many other dishes to add a bit of heat and flavour

MilduraS · 24/10/2021 15:00

I do a shop at an oriental supermarket every few months but I just spotted gochujang paste in Sainsbury an hour ago. Strangely it was next to the herbs/spices/salts rather than the Asian section of the world food aisle.

DeJaDont · 24/10/2021 15:20

Just ordered some gochujang paste to try that army stew. Can't wait!

I am a huge fan of Tom ka soup so really want to learn to make that.

I want to try home made kimchi and sauerkraut , so that's next on my list.

Adding to the enthusiastic recommendations for gochujang!

I've recently made my own kimchi at home and last night tried it in toasties with some strong cheddar, and it was amazing.

I've heard good things about food from the Philippines and would like to try that.

TomAllenWife · 24/10/2021 15:33

IMHO Korean food is the worst in the world, Ive had it 3 times and it's awful

I love Thai food and can't wait to go back

I'd love to cook more Thai and Chinese food at home

MilduraS · 24/10/2021 16:34

I'd love to try some vegetarian recipes from Peru. I spent a few weeks there about 15 years ago and the food was incredible. Im a big potato lover which helped when it came to eating veggie.

poppymaewrite · 24/10/2021 17:23

Thanks for that! Will need to pop into Sainsbury’s.

Could anyone give me a good kimchi recipe? I miss it so much!

You can't declare an entire cuisine terrible from cooking three times Grin

I love Korean food, and soju!

TomAllenWife · 24/10/2021 18:17

@Polmuggle oh I can Grin if I ever need to vomit I just think of those Korean meals

poppymaewrite · 24/10/2021 18:21

I do love potatoes but can’t say I’ve ever tried a dish from Peru. So much food I want to try!!

Do you have a different recipe for army stew?
Nothing in this list makes me want to try it Confused

made with ham, sausage, Spam, baked beans, kimchi, instant noodles, and gochujang. The dish was created shortly after the armistice that ended the Korean War, using the scrounged or smuggled surplus foods from U.S.

I agree. Chicken Marengo is along similar lines - but far better.
weegiemum · 24/10/2021 19:43

I'd love to be able to make good chicken noodle soup. I'm a great soup maker for lentil, carrot and coriander, leek and potato, but the children are asking for chicken noodle. Any recipes would be very much welcomed!

AwkwardSquad · 24/10/2021 20:14

I’d like to try Korean food, although I don’t eat meat so might be a bit tricky.

AwkwardSquad · 24/10/2021 20:17

And more Ethiopian food - I’ve had injera served with various veggie dishes once, and it was lovely

languagelover96 · 25/10/2021 04:53

Alternatives to baked potato wanted please. Thank you

This is the kimchi recipe I use. I’ve made it four or five times now (including one fail where I left it in my cupboard for two weeks and It just…. Died)
The gochugaru you use makes a big difference I’ve found. The first batch I bought were better but they are no longer on Amazon!
Currently eating kimchi fried rice for dinner :)
I’d like to try more Korean food too. I’m terrible with spicy food usually but for some reason I can handle Korean spice more.

blodynmelyn · 25/10/2021 21:06

I use one maangchi's kimchi recipes, she has various recipes including for vegan kimchi

Titsywoo · 25/10/2021 21:26

I love Korean food. Galbi Jim is my favourite. Also a big fan of Japanese food.

I'd like to try more things from other parts of Asia - Malaysia, Bali etc - I'm a big fan of coconut milk based curries.

AnitaMani · 25/10/2021 21:41

Proper Pho. I've done a cheats version but I want to spend two days making it properly.

BBC food has a really simple kimchi recipe. I make it all the time with anything and everything left in the salad draw. Eat with fried eggs on toast or crumpets.
AnitaMani · 25/10/2021 21:44

I'd also like to make proper Jewish chicken soup.

Bimblybomeyelash · 25/10/2021 21:48

I also would love to try Ethiopian food again. I love injeera with an assortment of dishes. Nowhere in my neck of the woods to try it though. Also proper Mexican food rather than texmex. And Vietnamese and Indonesian food. I’m a lazy chuck it in one pot type cook, so my own cooking is never very authentic!
