Guaranteed nut-free biscuit bars

Londonwriter · 21/10/2021 20:51

My son’s primary school have sent his Organix 100% fruit bar home with a note that it isn’t suitable for a packed lunch as it ‘may contain nuts’ (i.e. no nuts on the ingredient list, but made in a factory that also processes nuts).

He’s allowed to take a ‘biscuit bar’ to school. Can anyone recommend a 100% guaranteed nut-free biscuit bar that is also healthy?

P.S. And also palatable to a fussy four year old.

Creative Nature or Soreen malt loaf?

According to Fruit Bowl’s website, only their yogurt covered fruit flakes are produced in a factory which handles nuts. Their ‘school bars’ are fine.

Also, anything made by Nairns, such as these www.nairns-oatcakes.com/our-range/chunky-oat-biscuit-breaks/apple-cinnamon-chunky-oat-biscuit-breaks

Can you send it in unwrapped ?

MegBusset · 12/11/2021 12:40

That is ridiculous (speaking as parent to a nut allergic child).

What PP says, send it unwrapped and say it's home made 🤷‍♀️

daisychainsandrainbows · 12/11/2021 12:40

That's ridiculous and I would query if that is school policy or if an overzealous midday supervisor has just taken the law into their own hands. I can absolutely understand no nut ingredients but the vast majority of everyday products will 'possibly' contain traces of nuts as they just won't commit to being guaranteed nut free unless the whole factory is.

PS, Allergy UK do not recommend nut-free schools: www.allergyuk.org/living-with-an-allergy/at-school/

We’ve tried Nairns Chunky Biscuit Breaks and Soreen banana malt loaf, and they’ve worked really well.

However, yes, we’ve also figured out that - if we send stuff in our own wrapping - no one can complain Wink.

I agree with you and @daisychainsandrainbows that it is ridiculous. He’s unlikely to share his biscuit with another kid, so it’s like they thought the theoretical nut contamination was going to evaporate and drift across the lunchroom.

It’s particularly infuriating because my DS has ASD and is a really fussy eater. So, they’ve made me jump through additional hoops when it was hard enough already to get him to eat Sad.
