Cooked turkey breast

Poorbaby · 19/10/2021 02:15

We had a couple of turkey breasts that needed cooking so DH fried them tonight and had one for his dinner.

I went to bed at 7 with our newborn so will be having mine tomorrow. How would you suggest reheating jt? Or could it be eaten cold?

I get paranoid about food poisoning but am a starving breastfeeding mama in the day and quite excited at the thought of having it tomorrow. Just need some ideas!

I would eat it cold with a baked potato and butter, pickle or fruit jelly, and any salad stuff you have.

Or you could reheat in a white sauce flavoured with lemon juice and eat it with rice or pasta.

I wouldn't eat it. I don't like 'needed cooking'. ...

Depends on a few things.

  1. Why did they "need cooking"? Was it the use by date or past? If so, it doesn't matter if it's cooked or not - it's off and shouldn't be eaten. Cooking it doesn't make it last beyond its use by.

  2. Was it raw or cooked to begin with? Fresh? Frozen?

If it was a piece of raw meat within its use by that you have now cooked (and is still within its use by) it can be safely reheated in a microwave, oven or fried again, it will be fine.

Same if it was frozen and defrosted properly before cooking. If it wasn't defrosted properly before cooking, you shouldn't eat it.

If it was bought cooked and your husband frying it was basically heating it up, you probably shouldn't reheat it again but could eat it cold.

If it's past its use by, you shouldn't eat it at all.

I hadn’t considered that it might not have been cooked from raw, or that it could be past it.
Anyway, I just meant to add that if reheating in the lemony white sauce, you obviously cut it up into small pieces first.

I would interpret 'needed cooking' as 'we had them in, hadn't got round to using them and they were in date'. If OP was asking about safety of eating food over its use by date, she'd have said so.

OP, you could slice the turkey and make a substantial sandwich. Works very well with Gruyere or Emmental or similar cheese, or ham, mayo, salad. Mayo and mango chutney would be nice too. Or chop some turkey and mix with pasta and pesto or jarred sauce, eat a little salad on the side.

You could use any leftover slices to make a plain turkey sandwich which could go in the freezer for another time. Plain because mayo and salad don't freeze well, but on defrosting you could toast the sandwich and add mayo, Pesto, salad etc. Or just freeze any leftover turkey ready sliced or chopped. Enjoy whatever you decide to have today!

That's rubbish! Once it's cooked the use by date is irrelevant.

Thank you all! Yes it was fresh/raw and not out of date, hadn't previously been frozen.

It needed using as we bought them from the butcher on Saturday and they usually say to use things up within 2 or 3 days. Yesterday was only 2 days later.

I like the idea of a lovely sandwich with it cut up in thin slices, and also the pasta and pesto. Think I'll do one for lunch and the other for dinner!

I would either slice and make some sage and onion stuffing and make sandwiches add cranberry sauce if liked.

Or reheat in gravy and do a 'quick' roast dinner.
