What would you for Halloween/Bonfire party for adults?

Having friends over on 30th Oct for a sort of Halloween party/fire in the garden.

The kids like to decorate a little for Halloween and there will be a few pumpkins knocking about so in keeping with that I'm going to do some Bloody Mary syringes in a bowl of ice on the table because they look fun and wondered about attempting some mulled cider or hot rum for people to hold standing round the fire but apart from that wondering what to make for food. Don't want everything Halloween themed of course but just trying to get my head around winter party catering again! It's been such a while since I've done it!

There are 8 or 9 of us and I'd like to do a buffet style few dishes rather than sit down food. Have done chilli and sides before at a similar thing and have done curries for this particular group lots of times in the past.

People will probably pick and stand around but there is space for people to sit down and eat if they want/need

Wondering about a cheese fondue/baked Camemberts, anti pasti platters and some nice sausages and buns but is that a bit boring. I enjoy cooking.

Wouldn't mind a couple of Halloween type things as my kids would enjoy that too!

Was going to make an espresso martini cheesecake as a dessert which I've been wanting to try for ages.

Any good ideas?! I need some inspiration! Still got my head in summer bbq mode and need to remember Autumn is here!

Cheesecake looks awesome! Sausages, hot dog buns, lentil soup. Jacket potatoes. Antipasti is always great for any occasion.

ReturntoSpamfritters · 11/10/2021 22:26

Mulled cider AND hot rum Smile

Atalune · 11/10/2021 22:32

Not sure about an antipasti platter when it’s cold… We always do roast potatoes as “nibbles” when it’s a cold garden party and they go down a storm. Them an good quality butcher sausages roasted in marmalade. Cut them
Up and have on sticks. After that I might do one of

Golden coconut Dahl
Chicken basque
Jamie Oliver beef stew
Chicken burritos

Also we always have mulled cider for autumn.

Pie and peas!

Palavah · 11/10/2021 22:35

Parkin! Or something with parkin, for pudding.

Shangrilalala · 11/10/2021 22:40

We always have this on bonfire night

dianesfavouriterecipes.blogspot.com/p/spicy-bean-stew-with-sausages-this-is.html?m=1

It’s quite rustic but warming and lovely with a good bread.

Impatientwino · 11/10/2021 22:41

Oh yum! Thank you so much!

I can't tell you how much I want a roast potato right now! And a hot rum!

Plus some Smores for the children, mine love burning their own marshmallows

Impatientwino · 12/10/2021 14:21

@ReturntoSpamfritters - ohh my kids would love those! what do you use instead of the Graham crackers? (If you are in the UK)

Digestives for s'mores here

AdaColeman · 12/10/2021 14:34

Mugs of hot soup, a puree of leek and potato or a French onion soup or borsch would work well.

Wild mushroom quiche, or wild mushroom stroganoff with rice?

Ginger and orange trifle?

SilentBob · 12/10/2021 14:41

Twice baked stuffed jacket halves- cheese or cheese and spring onion or cheese and smoked crispy bacon.

Mominatrix · 12/10/2021 17:06

pumpkin soup
pastry twirled sausages (mummy sausages)
little bowls of spaghetti and meatballs to look like cauldrons
spiderweb pizzas
toffee apples
pulled pork stuffed jacket potatoes just because it is autumnal and yummy

Chocolate digestives are good, but if you can find the chocolate digestive thins, those are even better. Like 10/10 good.

languagelover96 · 13/10/2021 17:36

Buck Fizz
Sausage roll
Pumpkin cupcakes
Pumpkin soup
Pumpkin pie
Toffee apples
Biscuits
Salad of some kind

ReturntoSpamfritters · 13/10/2021 18:21

@Impatientwino Having suggested chocolate digestive thins, I now see that they are out of stock/unavailable everywhere Sad
So it will be just normal chocolate digestives then.
If we can still get those.
Humph.

AlfonsoTheDinosaur · 13/10/2021 18:59

Mulled wine, jacket potatoes, sausages with good bread, vegetable soup, parkin.

Impatientwino · 13/10/2021 22:34

Those sausages look great! I love the eyes!

Digestive thins are dangerous little feckers, you think you've only eaten two or three but then the whole pack has gone. As sad as I am that they are gone it's probably a good thing!

In case it's of interest or use to anyone I did the following

Bloody Mary Syringes
Devils on horseback
Sesame and Honey Halloumi fries
Pork and apple sausage rolls
Smoked salmon and horseradish cream toasts
Baked Camembert

Then a bit later we did

Sausages on the bbq
'Bonfire night potatoes' from bbc good food but without the bacon
Green salad
Bread

The cheesecake tasted lovely but the base was still a bit hard from the freezer so I'd take it out earlier next time!

The potatoes were delicious if anyone wants the recipe I'll add it below. I added some cheddar too - ratio of 2 parts gruyere 1 part cheddar

The syringes were great fun!

Too late for this year's party, OP, but I made Felicity Cloake's Pumpkin Soup recipe this year and can highly recommend it. It's going to be my go-to recipe every year from now on. And yes, her name really is the very apt Cloake.
