silicone bake ware -what is it good for ?

I'm a very basic cook and have just ventured into a little baking - pies ,quiches ,tea loaves ,cakes .

I have a few silicone "tins" ,but are they fit for anything ? I have this feeling ( borne out by a few experiments ) that they don't conduct heat well and are not so good for my above dishes as metal ones .

Any advice ?Thoughts ?

I agree! I ditched all mine. I found that the silicone cake 'tins' bowed with the mix so they didn't come out with straight sides. No good for pastry either I found, so I'm with you! The only thing I kept were cup cake cases, handy to be able to reuse them.

Yeah, I don't really like them. Except for brownies - my silicone brownie pan is awesome, as they don't need the same kind of heat transfer as e.g. bread, and it means they don't stick.

I was going to say brownies and blondies! Come out lovely in those tins.

Traybakes like brownies or millionaire shortbread, flapjack, rocky road. Sponges not so good.

I've got a silicon loaf tin that's brilliant for banana bread - comes out perfect every time and doesn't need lining.

I use a silicone muffin tray for making savoury egg muffin/ quiche things for lunch boxes. I put it on a baking sheet first otherwise it's too floppy. I don't bother with cases, they just pop out. Also use it for Yorkshire puddings.

Love my silicone cook ware I'm never going back. Should cook everything you say properly. I use mine to make Yorkshire puddings too and they always come out huge

They're good for any fridge cakes, or as tins for homemade ice-cream.

we have a few that work well and others that are shit.

good

  • guglhupf forms
  • microwave omlette form
  • chocolate mould
  • baguette tray

bad

  • cupcake forms (they have a funny taste)
  • cupcake tray (has a funny taste when baking but it ok, if a bit big, as ice tray)
  • pie form, too wobbly. case breaks and it's difficult to transfer in and out of the oven
  • bread tin. too wobbly, it bulges

I thought they were shit. Everything stuck to them, as other people said, the sides bulge out. Big fat no from me.
