For me nigellas boozy british trufle is the best www.mydish.co.uk/recipe/8485/nigella-lawsons-boozy-british-christmas-trifle
Although I only make it at Christmas, it goes down a storm every time

Very easy one. Jam only Swiss roll sliced at the base. Sliced bananas on top. Liberal pouring of Sherry over Swiss roll slices. Ambrosia custard poured over. Then whipped cream and chocolate shavings to finish. It's a bit sloppy but absolutely delicious. You can substitute Ambrosia custard for any shop bought.

Tinpotspectator · 02/10/2021 10:12

As above, but skip the banana and put raspberries in the jelly. Frozen are good, and you'll need to add a bit less water to the jelly. Swiss role or trifle sponges equally good, or even stale cake. (As if!) There are tons of alternatives these days, but I imagine that they are not what your dad would have had in the past.

Thank you all - really helpful- just what I was after - I am sure he will love them

What liquid do you all use to moisten the cake when you can't put alcohol in? I've tried orange juice and raspberry coulis (that wasn't bad) but does anyone have any other suggestions?

Wafflehouse · 04/10/2021 07:50

My dm and dgm always made theirs with tinned fruit and used the syrup or juice from the tin to moisten the sponge before putting jelly on. I know it’s not a proper trifle and sounds grim but it reminds me of my childhood and I love it.

Sleepyteach · 04/10/2021 15:19

I have Swiss roll as the base, doused in Sherry. (Don’t be shy with it!!) tinned orange segments and strawberry jelly. When jelly has set pour custard over the top (I use cartons), chill and then put whipped cream over the top - I find Elmlea spreads better than real cream. Have used orange for an alcohol free one in the past, it’s not the same but it’s passable.

Make a Black Forest trifle with chocolate cake or swiss roll as the base , and use tinned black cherries as the fruit layer. If using jelly, use a cherry or raspberry flavour and make up the jelly with the juice from your tin of cherries. Don't skimp on the cream. Delicious and indulgent.

Where do you get cherry jelly from?
I've never seen it and would love to try it.

Lorraine Pascal's My Big Fat Tipsy Trifle is gorgeous and very pretty.

Amaretto & strawberries - DELICIOUS!

How has no one mentioned the layer of beef sautéed with peas and onions?

fluffiphlox · 04/10/2021 19:32

I make Delia’s trifle from her Christmas book.

Hartleys do a Black Cherry jelly. They have it Sainsburys and Asda. (Probably other places too...but that's where I have seen it)
iklboo · 04/10/2021 19:45

Unusual one but went down very well;

Jamaican ginger cake (moist enough already)
Lemon jelly
Custard with ginger syrup mixed in
Whipped double cream
Crushed ginger nuts sprinkled on top

revampneeded · 04/10/2021 19:46

Love the Black Forest idea. I'm crazy about Nigella's Anglo Italian trifle with blackberries.

Shock your taste buds with black cherry Hartleys jelly, or have you tried calamansi jelly from M&S?
CatKittyCatCatKittyCatCat · 04/10/2021 20:02

Ginger cake with liberal chocolate spread, spices pears, custard, Grated mint chocolate and flaked almonds

MyrealnameisBernard · 04/10/2021 20:45

White chocolate and raspberry
Make jam "sandwiches " using shop bought Madeira. Cover with frozen raspberries and a slosh of Sherry, Brandy, kitsch or port , melt a 100g of white chocolate and stir that into ready bought custard. Top the sponge later with said custard, then whipped cream with a bit of vanilla extract, then decorate with grated white chocolate.

Jamie Oliver's retro trifle; I made it one Christmas and it went down a storm .... tinned mandarins in orange jelly, blancmange, strawberries in jelly, custard, cream. Delicious! I don't think I put the Cointreau on the sponge layer as I hate alcohol in trifle.

pinkhampoppy · 05/10/2021 09:16

A Delia one - cherry and chocolate.

BeaLola · 10/10/2021 08:51

Wow - thank you for all the updates- looking forward to trying them all out on him

I use homemade sponge cake and no jelly though Nigellas with real custard would be fab.
