I've got the sausages and a batter mix, but not sure how long to cook for in the oven and at what temperature. Any advice/recipes gratefully received

My Mum started by telling me 160 degrees and has now worked her way up to 190 degrees Also, I don't know how long it goes in the oven for.
Please someone! Am s'posed to be doing this tonight for tea!

Toad is one of those things that I can't seem to get right. It's not even that hard!

My recipe is:

Call DH
Get him to make it.

We do cook everything at 200 though.

SquonkaClaus · 05/12/2007 15:48

first, cook the sausages.

While they're doing, make up the batter mix (you bought a packet? don't do that again, ask squonky and I'll tell you how to make it from scratch)

Put a bit of oil in the bottom of your tray and put in a hot oven (hotter than 180 but there are varying recipes - I always do mine at 220) leave it there till the oil is smoking.

Put a bit of batter in the tray, add sausages, add the rest of the batter then put back in the oven for 20 mins.

DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR

that's it.

"My recipe is:

Call DH
Get him to make it. " I'm nominating that for quote of the week

PestohohohoMonster · 05/12/2007 15:50

Thanks Squonky! Would you say 200 degrees too?

whenever i make it, regardless of following recipe and making own batter, it is crapola ! never rises and tastes greasy

PestohohohoMonster · 05/12/2007 15:52

Oh dear... I do hope mine doesn't turn out like that.

yep, 200 should be fine.

But remember all ovens are different, so if it doesn't work out this time, try again with a different temp.

good luck

PestohohohoMonster · 05/12/2007 15:53

Ok, it's for the dds and a friend, so if it all goes tits up pear shaped, I can always bung a few nuggets in instead

The thing is, squonk, it turns out perfect every time!

ATortIsForLifeNotJustChristmas · 05/12/2007 21:35

I add grated cheese to the batter before puring over the sausages.

Toads in cheesy holes

Delicious and perfect everytime.
(I never heat the dish before putting them in though.)

ATortIsForLifeNotJustChristmas · 05/12/2007 21:36

pouring*
looks like a purr like a cat over them otherwise.

stealthsquiggle · 05/12/2007 21:46

Toads in cheesy holes sound interesting.

I like Jane's recipe - in our house it would turn out perfect every time as long as I didn't mind the 3 dishwasher loads of washing up and the DC eating at 10pm

My Toad in the Hole recipe comes from Pooh's Cook Book (also used for recipe for drop scones)!

LazyLinePainterJane · 06/12/2007 07:29

squiggle, that is one unfortunate consequence, all the washing up.

However, if I make a disgusted enough face, the washing up gets done as well

ChopsterRoastingOnAnOpenFire · 06/12/2007 08:20

this is the best toad recipe ever, for next time. I can gobble half of that on my own.

Elfsmummy · 06/12/2007 08:23

Also for next time, you can make individual ones in muffin or yorkshire pudding tins which are great for kids. And easier to serve

Put one sausage in each section and add the batter.

I put my oven at 220. Not a fan one though
