2 Year Old Breakfast Idea's - please help.

Hi Everyone.

My DS is 2 years old and doesn't really like breakfast. What is considered a good breakfast? He will have a yoghurt every morning, the rest is an occassional thing, like sometimes he will have a biscuit, sometimes some fruit and sometimes some dry cereal. He won't eat cereal with milk of any kind, won't eat toast. Some days all he will have is a yoghurt. I'm not sure what to try anymore, any help or idea's will be much appreciated. Thanks.

toast, weetabix, porridge oats cooked in milk, yogurt pancakes.

Mine also like that but happy to have a "snack" 1 hour later. And the snack will actually be what I'd give for breakfast: fruit, dry cereal (he will also never mix it with milk), toast, breadsticks, cereal bar etc...

I have been known to stir oats into dd's yogurt for breakfast when she's going through a yogurt phase but I need her to eat something more filling.

Also used to stir in stewed fruit.

Also give her banana, oat and milk smoothies sometimes.

Pancakes or drop scones make a nice change now and then.

Weetabix with warm milk, rather than cold?

My dd doesn't reall go a bundle on breakfast either. Good and bad phases. She does have a cup of milk, and as long as she eats something, however small, I don't worry too much as she'll soon tell me if she's hungry later.

If it's been a particularly bad breakfast and we're off out, I do a filling and interesting snack trap for her - bran and raisins and apple and cheese, or something with dried fruit and breadsticks.

Hi mairi

I give my ds a smoothie.
Either home made (with yoghurt and fruit in) or (if pushed for time) an Innocent one!

He then has toast later on.

don't worry too much about it. It is probably a stage. Make sure you offer a decent snack mid-morning and just ride it out. He will soon start enjoying it again. You could try a make breakfast together (i.e, chopping up a fruit salad, making porridge) but ime they eat when they are hungry and don't eat when they don't

witchandchips · 05/12/2007 14:21

btw. don't offer alternatives

How about scrambled eggs. My DD is 24 months and this is her favourite.

Thanks all for your idea's. Have tried waffles, pancakes, porridge and things like that, still no go. I'm not sure how often to try it. It's been a year now since he last had porridge or weetabix for breakfast. Although I know that there are countries where fruit and yoghurt are considered good breakfast food. So I suppose I shouldn't worry too much. Very hard not to.

Mairi my son was the same and I eventually realised that any food that he enjoyed at other times of the day was also fine to give for breakfast. Eg, a cheese sandwich is nutritionally equivalent to a bowl of cereal and milk. I also used to give (home made) pizza! it has the same ingredients - wheat and cow's milk - as a bowl of cereal. We just get hung up on thinking they should be eating certain foods at certain times - it doesn't matter when you are 2

bubblagirl · 06/12/2007 19:06

my ds loves egg and soldiers for breakfast you can make shapres out of toast with cutters

mairimac · 10/12/2007 14:01

Thanks all. My ds has a bit of neophobia I think, I'm not sure it's the taste he doesn't like because he will refuse stuff on sight, saying he doesn't like the shape or colour or that it just looks odd to him. His favourite is to say "not look nice"! So getting him to try things is a hard part. So egg is out, toast occassionally and only spreading cheese on toast nothing else and so it goes on.

My 2.10 yr old has cereal & banana most days, but at the weekends we try to vary it a bit. How about:

Currant buns / fruit loaf
English muffins / croissants / brioche / bagels (with jam / honey / cream cheese)
Experiment with different types of bread...?
Pancakes
Fruit salad / fruit slices / a smoothie
Eggy bread / french toast
Cheese on toast / Welsh rarebit
Sausages with a little 'dipping pot' of ketchup
Soft boiled egg & toast soldiers

When my son isn't in the mood for breakfast, I always think a banana and a glass of milk (or a yoghurt) makes a quick, healthy breakfast.

LoveAngelGabriel · 10/12/2007 15:40

p.s. my son hates eggs, but loves eggy bread
