Does anyone have a decent simple recipe for a moist chocolate cake? I haven't done any baking in years, but I really want to make my friend a birthday cake.

Thanks in advance!

I made this and it was good (also, easy) - www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/naughty-chocolate-fudge-cake - DS said it was the best cake I had ever made (although this may say more about my baking skills than the cake).

I make the mumsnet chocolate cake. Although I add choc chips to the mix, and I make my own chocolate buttercream for the top.

Grin @ @GolfForBrains
That made me chortle
Thanks for that though nice chocolate cake is the holy grail imho.

This is my "go-to". It's really quick to put together, foolproof, I've used it for a couple of birthdays and it always gets complimented. If I'm just making it at home often I cba with icing, it's v good just on its own.

(but do pay attention to the instruction to line the tin with baking paper - the mixture is very wet so leaks out the bottom if you just put it straight in!)

The Bero cookbook milk chocolate cake is the best chocolate cake in the world.

I know it's technically not just chocolate, but nigellas Guinness and chocolate cake with cream cheese icing is a thing of beauty. So easy, do it in a big saucepan and bung it in the oven

It lasts days without going stale too.

Yes, I'm sure I've made and enjoyed this recipe many a time, fail safe

We like this one too.

The BBC good food ultimate chocolate cake is lovely - I've used it for two birthday cakes this year. I didn't like the icing to cake ratio when I first made it, so now I make 2/3 of the cake mixture and make two layers, but I use the full quantity of ganache.

Mary Berry’s all in one Victoria sandwich cake recipe. I substitute a quarter of the SR Flour for cocoa and add a splash of milk.

Then fill and ice with Delia’s Chocolate fudge icing.

Nigella's Old Fashioned Chocolate cake is superb - the recipe includes sour cream.

Yep, was going to post this. I rarely have sour cream so plain yoghurt works instead
AnnaDyne · 16/09/2021 20:54

Nigella's chocolate guinness cake is the best chocolate cake ever.

The Nigella flourless chocolate orange cake is a staple in our house for birthdays.

kittythehedgehog · 16/09/2021 21:21

I get the Betty Crocker devils chocolate cake box mix and buy a ready made chocolate fudge icing. It feels like cheating but it's better than any other chocolate cake I've ever made!

PolytheneRam · 16/09/2021 21:59

Thank you for all the ideas! I'll check out the links tomorrow, and report back next week once it's made

Also came on to suggest this one. It's sooooo reliable. I've made it countless times and it's never failed.

I third Nigella's chocolate Guinness cake. I add mashed Oreo cookies (just the wafer) to the icing, holding back the chunky pieces to sprinkle on top. Really popular every time I make it.

yes, this one is lovely!

alternatively if you use the 'weigh the egg' method for a sponge cake, weigh out the cocoa powder within the flower portion, add a tablespoon of milk or orange juice. and melt a bar (100g) of chocolate with the butter to add to the ingredents.

What gives American cake mixes like Betty Crocker their moist texture is that they use oil instead of butter.
My failsafe is called 'wacky cake' or 'depression cake - it's a recipe developed during the depression so uses very basic, inexpensive ingredients but always turns out perfectly moist and springy.
