Pattypan

DH is a good man except for his tendency to panic buy.
Today he excelled himself and paid £1.00 for hefty pattypan squash.
I’ve tried googling a recipe but most are for the smaller ones.
This weighs a kilo and I have no idea what to do with it.
I don’t want to put it in the food collection bin as I hate food waste but unless one of you wonderful women can come up with a recipe it’s off into the food bin

Use it a lamb and squash curry?
My dh made a nice squash and pancetta pasta sauce the other week.

ErrolTheDragon · 13/09/2021 17:39

Chop it into cubes and roast it, maybe half or a quarter at a time depending on how hefty it is?

ErrolTheDragon · 13/09/2021 17:40

And second suggestion is that you say to your DH, 'that looks lovely, I'll look forward to trying whatever you make from it'.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 13/09/2021 17:40

Where did he buy it? I’ve been lusting after one for ages!

dementedpixie · 13/09/2021 17:41

You could always use some and chop and freeze the rest

AdditionalCharacter · 13/09/2021 17:43

My mum makes a sort of ratatouille with the smaller ones, so perhaps chop/slice it up and do that?

CheerfulBunny · 13/09/2021 17:56

I grew them once - isn't it basically a flat round courgette? Mine were cute little yellow ones though.

Hugh fw's lamb and squash curry

I love this recipe naturallyella.com/summer-squash-soup/ . Unfortunately I have a glut of home grown patty pan. They are also fine in any recipe that you would use a courgette.

Wildernesstips · 13/09/2021 19:09

@DrinkFeckArseGirls if you are in the South West, come and have some of mine 😂!

Peckhampalace · 13/09/2021 23:51

I have had a glut this year. Roast with tomato, onion, chilli and herbs and use as a side to meat or add feta and olives as a salad.
Also good sliced in half, seeds scooped out and stuffed with sausage meat or Bolognese type sauce.

Mydogisagentleman · 14/09/2021 08:02

Thanks for those ideas.
I’ll be giving the curry a go.

Made Hugh FW lamb recipe.
Won’t be doing it again. It was sweet (unsurprising given it had a jar of chutney in it), expensive and the pattypan added nothing.

Sorry to hear it wasn't to your taste - family favourite here, but hey, we're all different.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 23/09/2021 13:48

I think it’s has quite a delicate taste that could easily get lost in a curry. When I was little my family would slice it (it would be called patty pan steaks these days Hmm) and gently fry it till golden. Sprinkle with salt, that’s it!

Rick Stein has a lamb and sweet potato curry that dh makes with squash instead. Maybe try that?
Its in his India book and might be online too
