I've tried the quaker ones and they are like slop are any others any better? Not for me, for DS (away at uni) who refuses to make traditional porridge.

Flavahans in a cylindrical container. Think Sainsbury’s do them x

The quaker ones are fine IMO if you make them with less milk than they recommend.

EmeraldGreenVelvet · 07/09/2021 14:38

If he's old enough to live away at uni, why are you insisting that he makes porridge when he clearly can't be bothered?

SallyLondon · 07/09/2021 14:39

You can use regular oats in the microwave in exactly the same way as Oat So Simple, just need an appropriately sized scoop.

Bagelsandbrie · 07/09/2021 14:39

Ready brek instead..?

Imtoooldforallthis · 07/09/2021 14:40

I know you said she doesn't want to make it from scratch but all I do is use a 1/3 cup measurement and it's 1 of oats and 2 of milk, microwave for 2.5 mins job done it really couldn't be easier or cheaper.

Quaker microwave sachets are yummy. We eat the strawberry, raspberry and cranberry ones with a dollop of cream on top. Micro for 2min 30 sec.

@SallyLondon & @Imtoooldforallthis I didn't know that, that is a game-changer then! No additives or powdered milk are involved that way. thanks Flowers

Just make sure to use a MUCH bigger bowl than the one you’d eat out of. In my experience with oats and milk making porridge in the microwave, it swells up with bubbling milk to about 3x the volume while cooking, before settling back down again to a normal size. Can be messy if you’re just using a standard size cereal bowl!

TheWayTheLightFalls · 07/09/2021 15:52

What @Imtoooldforallthis wrote. Works every time and will cost a fraction of the cost of instant.

Imtoooldforallthis · 07/09/2021 18:02

Oh and just to add, I am dieting, so I have exactly the same thing every morning which is porridge with lots of cinnamon and nutmeg and a sliced banana, no added sugar or honey as non needed.

Mommybunny · 09/09/2021 22:40

@Imtoooldforallthis is spot on, every day I microwave 1/2 cup porridge oats with twice the amount of water on high 2 minutes, then stir and go back another 1:30. I leave it to sit a minute as I like it rather lumpy then mix in another 1/2 cup milk and whatever fruit/spice/sweetener I fancy.

We have apples on our tree right now so I chop up the windfalls and microwave them in a covered Pyrex with a splash of water, some cinnamon, a bit of sugar and sometimes a slug of brandy till they’re pulped down. I keep that in the fridge and plop a spoonful in my porridge for the fruit and sweetener in one go. Dead easy.

Would he consider some overnight oats ? So easy to do in the evening and breakfast ready AM straight from the fridge
I take a small scoop of thick rolled oats
Pour and stir a fat free plain Greek style yoghurt, make sure all oats coated
Add some frozen fruit ( blueberries work well ) some others don't 😩
Stick the tub in the fridge- in the morning just a good stir round
You could get very imaginative with toppings seeds etc
If I don't use frozen I like banana and some chocolate hips

I also make my own instant porridge for work - use milk powder and dried fruit! Add boiling water, stir and stand....
