Filling food that isn't bread?

ExpressDelivery · 15/08/2021 19:34

First of all, this isn't about weight loss or low carbing. I run around 40 miles a week, carbs are a good thing and I don't need to lose weight.

I want to eat good nutritious food to fuel my running, but find I eat a lot of (wholegrain) bread. I think my diet would be better with more variety. It's not that I think wheat is "bad" it's that I think having it at every meal probably is.

So I've had my evening meal (chicken and veg curry with rice) and I'm still hungry. I don't want pudding, don't generally have refined sugar, usually I'd get some toast. What's an alternative?

Banana, meridian nut butter and Greek yoghurt?

cricketmum84 · 15/08/2021 19:36

What about nuts? I do a low carb diet (I know you don't) but I do find a small handful of nuts quite filling.

pastabest · 15/08/2021 19:37

Greek yoghurt
Carrot sticks and dip
Cheese
Popcorn
Cherry tomatoes
Peanuts

Hmm, you see in the interest of a good varied diet, I've already had most of those those today. I find I eat the same few things all the time.

-Breakfast toast and nut butter with fruit
-Lunch cheese and tomato sandwiches carrot sticks, followed by Greek yogurt and banana

  • afternoon snack two good handfuls of nuts
  • dinner chicken curry with sweet potato and spinach, brown rice.

Add dal to that meal. Always keep some wraps in the freezer so you can have leftovers plus salad or cheese or whatever no faff.

My fav snack / pudding two squares dark chocolate with a feck off big bit of marzipan between them.

Or muffins nom101.weebly.com/food-for-survival/muffins

LordEmsworth · 15/08/2021 19:43

I would probably go for either sliced apple with nut butter, or a chunk of cheese - I find they are very satiating and I wouldn't want to be faffing, having already cooked.

Actually I lie, personally I'd have pudding Grin.

Is it a dumb question to ask why you don't just increase portion size? Or have salad with it?

SomethingToldTheWildGeese · 15/08/2021 19:44

Bulgar wheat - you can get it in tescos, takes 10 mins to cook, is full of micronutrients and very filling! And yummy!

BrilliantBetty · 15/08/2021 19:46

Couple of hard boiled eggs as a snack.

Cashews with raisins.

Thai rice crackers.

A banana.

Some chips!

Tanaqui · 15/08/2021 19:49

Oatcakes?

KihoBebiluPute · 15/08/2021 19:52

If you aren't finding your meal filling it's probably too low in fat. In future make your curry with a bit more oil maybe? Or have a few bits of good quality cheese with a few oat crackers and some chutney.

Passthecake30 · 15/08/2021 19:54

I feel the munchies often. What works for me is an apple and nuts, or a cup of soya hot chocolate.

MuttsNutts · 15/08/2021 19:54

Can’t you just have a bigger dinner?

Sgtmajormummy · 15/08/2021 19:55

Chia seeds and a glass of water? They’ll swell up inside you x20!

Guineapigbridge · 15/08/2021 19:57

A spoon or two of high protein yoghurt with berries? Or some cheese?

Guineapigbridge · 15/08/2021 19:57

Sometimes I have hot milk with cinnamon stirred through.

ifigoup · 15/08/2021 19:57

Porridge
Low-sugar flapjacks
Baby pancakes made with just banana and egg
Weetabix (though I appreciate that’s still wheat!)
Cheese

Bimblybomeyelash · 15/08/2021 20:00

I’d just have seconds if it was me! But if it’s a few hours after dinner and I fancy a snack I usually have a bowl of cornflakes, maybe with a sliced banana or some dried fruit added too (and milk of course). But I’m
not one for spending too much time thinking about my diet - I just eat what I fancy!

Guineapigbridge · 15/08/2021 20:02

Yum, cornflakes Star

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 15/08/2021 20:06

Protein is good at filling up, something like a boiled egg, a chunk of cheese, beef jerky, a couple of slices of salami and some olives, cottage cheese (longley farms full fat wins against any and all cottage cheeses).

felulageller · 15/08/2021 21:18

Ryvita with smoked Salmon
Baked beans
Any kind of eggs
Smoothie
Cereal and milk
Dahl
Lentil soup
Add lentils to your normal curry
Oatcakes with cheese and chutney

SpaceOp · 15/08/2021 22:01

I wonder if your main meal is not big enough. As a rule, I would not expect to be hungry after a main meal and something small like a biscuit or a square of chocolate is all I'd eat. Can you up the size of the curry and rice portion?

Rice cakes with a bit of cheese (assuming you don't want crackers as it's white flour?)
Muffins - (admittedly, flour, but you can make oat/bran/wholegrain ones with fruit/nuts etc).
Fruit?

RoseMartha · 15/08/2021 22:52

I like a couple of bits of dark chocolate

Museli no added sugar in the evening?
Or porridge and fruit for breakfast then your toast thing as a snack.

I also eat breadsticks

Or cheese and couple of small crackers or really thin ryevita type things.

Malt loaf or is that too sugary?

Stewed fruit and natural yoghurt

househuntinginthesouth · 15/08/2021 23:06

A little bowl of wholewheat pasta or lentils with veg?
Some mixed beans?
Some nuts?
I find porridge with peanut butter in extremely filling.
Some fruit?

Georgyporky · 16/08/2021 10:41

Protein for me. Eggs in some form for breakfast usually, maybe bacon & avocado sarnie.
A "full English" cooked breakfast at an hotel is my ideal, but I cba to do it very often at home.
