I love celeriac.

But I have no idea re turnips. What do you do with them?

Ideas required!

Don't they just pad out other things like casseroles and soups? Never heard of them on their own.

AMerryScot · 29/11/2007 22:14

Neeps! You can boil and mash them. They are very sweet, like parsnips and carrots.

The are a good addition to shepherds' pie.

notnowbernard · 29/11/2007 22:17

Keep getting them in the vegetable box.

I like getting things I would never normally buy, but am at a loss with the neeps!

Do you mash them with butter and black pepper etc?

I use them in casseroles etc and often add some in recipes that call for carrots, along with the carrots. Or you can roast them. I love all roasted root veg.

pointydog · 29/11/2007 22:21

Turnips! Turnips people, a home grown vegetable. You'd never be stuck with an avocado, would you?

Cook 'em and mash'em. Pepper and butter, yum. Instead of mashed carrot for example.

Put in in mince, cottage pie etc. Add it to a broth.

pointydog · 29/11/2007 22:22

merryscot, can you beleive it

pointydog · 29/11/2007 22:22

do you live in the south, bernard?

notnowbernard · 29/11/2007 22:23

Mashed 'neeps' for us, then!

Thanks

I am a southern pansy, yes

We have no neep mountains here...

Bit of a turnip fan then pointy?

pointydog · 29/11/2007 22:26

ok, understandable then. Imagine the southerner's surprise at finding a turnip in her vegetable box.

I don't actually buy turnip a lot. It's a very hard vegetable. But I like the taste.

pointydog · 29/11/2007 22:27

They are very cheap so your box will be bulging with them. So to speak.

onebatmother · 29/11/2007 22:56

They are lovely roasted. I do a big dish of mixed roasted veg with sweet potatoes, butternut squash, turnip etc.

They are also lovely mashed and in mince.
