breadcrumbs. I'm vegan so make felafel and veggie burgers without eggs.

kiskidee · 28/11/2007 19:29

taa need more coffee, what else do you recommend to get iron into her. she's mildly anaemic too and doesn't eat much meat anyway plus has mild cow's milk allergy.

I'm sure the Annabel Karmel burger recipe I used to use had 1lb mince, diced onion, a grated apple and a bit of seasoning but no egg. I don't have the book now to check.

karen999 · 28/11/2007 19:42

I have the book - if you want me to check and then post the recipe let me know.

What about home made pizzas with some green veg on top (runner beans) can you make the pizza dough without egg? I am not a great cook so am not sure but pizza always seems to be a winner!

brocolli, chard, green leafy vegetables. Cow's milk is a crap source of iron. Some nutritionits say it actually inhibits iron absoption.
My dd is 3. She eats mashed veggies (she has CP so can't chew) for every meal and porridge for breakfast. This evening for tea she had masked sweet potato, mashed baked beans and mashed chopped chard. Lunch was potato and carrot soup with bread broekn up into it (she chokes on runny stuff). In a bit she'll have banana and vegan cream mashed up.
I bought all 4 of my kids up as vegans (they were meant to be veggie but all 3 got excema from dairy) and apart from dd2, they have been healthy, growing well etc etc. dd1 was anaemic during his first year cos he nearly died after ABO blood incompatability and was very jaundiced so he had sytron and regular blood tests.
How do you know your dd is anemic?
All green leafy veg has iron in it. Wholegrains also do (white grains have bugger all of anything useful in). I make flapjacks using molasses. dried fruits like apricots and raisens have lots of iron. Eat vit C and it helps iron absorption.
Hope that helps.

I've never seen a pizza dough recipe that has egg in it.

MrsBadger · 28/11/2007 19:46

you don't need egg for burgers anyway - decent mince (not extra lean) stays together by itself

use a spoonful of yoghurt in fishcakes

kiskidee · 29/11/2007 05:58

i know she is anaemic because she has recently had blood work done because of atopic eczema and now asthma. we didn't think she was milk allergic because previously they tested for it and they said she wasn't. she only has small amts of cow's milk but has goat's milk yoghurt.

you wouldn't believe how i had to push to get the paed. appt even though it was going to be covered by bupa.

the thing is, i work full time so i don't have much time to make my own stuff for her. I have an appt on Mon at the GP's but think I will ask for an appt with the paed. again or someone who can give me more advice about food.

she refuses so many of the things you mention - at home anyway and lots of those won't be on her nursery's menu.

I seem to remember that beans are a great source of iron. no? another daft question. what is felafel made of?

i must admit, someone gave me an annabel karmel recipe book and i have gotten rid of it. i don't believe in making separate stuff for dd and then for us - just one thing for everyone - and i found her recipes a bit pretentious. so what does her burger recipe say?

i think one reason her anaemia is not worse is because she still bf a lot when we are together and we cosleep.

thanks mrsbadger, i didn't know that about mince.

felafel is made of chickpeas. I'm assuming she is a toddler? Toddlers will refuse something I think they say 17 times before accpeting it. If she's had lots of jar food she may find real food too tasty. Jar food, even the posh organix stuff is very bland and a weird texture. Just keep offering food, toddlers wont starve themselves!
Chopping up a sweet pot and chuck in a chopped chard leave takes about 2 mins and cooks in 5.

There's a book called dairy free/egg free but I can't remember who its by.
Beans do contain iron as do some nuts (I didn't do nuts till 3 cos my all had execma so I figured they were all slightly allergic so didn't want to risk it)
What sort of things do you eat? If you had steamed broccoli, meat or fish of some description, mashed sweet pot and normal potato thats a full meal she can share. Or veg curry made with coconut milk.
My dd shares what we have when she can but she can't eat rice or pasta cos she can't chew. On those days I do the sweet pot thing or half a butternut squah and stick half in the oven (prep time 30 seconds)
Good nutrition is more important than work when its your child's health but it really isn't as complicated as all those posh chefs make it sound.

kiskidee · 29/11/2007 15:36

thanks for reminding me how many times toddlers will refuse a food. She didn't eat jar food. I grew up with only home cooking and i am partial to that. I was brought up with Mexican and Caribbean food but now also cook some English, Italian and dabble in Asian. /So far she has refused all peas and pulses and I don't know yet if she can have them. (i am only going on the portion of the paed's message that was recorded. We have an appt with the GP next week who will have his letter.) I love sweet pot so will have to keep offering that but she doesnt know she likes it yet. I was looking at a website today that had almond spread and she loves almonds so can substitute that for butter, jam etc. I think she also will eat walnuts and cashews so i guess she isn't allergic to those.

Thanks for helping me think o/s the box. Coconut milk to cook broccoli sounds yum.

If you can find the name of that book, I will ahve a look.

thanks a lot. this is still sinking in that i will have to change what we all eat as dh is not much of a cook.

My DS is allergic to dairy eggs and nuts, I always use a bit of melted pure marg instead of egg to bind when I'm cooking...
Didn't the doctor suggest anything for her anaemia? or to even see a dietitian?

needmorecoffee · 29/11/2007 15:59

right now I'm mashing a vegetable finger for dd. They are dairy/egg free but its a bit embaressing. I have a horrid migraine so just want something in her tummy

kiskidee · 29/11/2007 19:36

i haven't seen the doctor yet. only had a msg left on the phone which ran out before he was finished talking.

I meant to add to my last post that i agree that her food is more important that work but otoh it feels like another thing that is (almost) entirely down to me as dh works long hrs, i still bf and we cosleep and she feeds at night plus he is a pretty crap cook so i do almost all that too.

OP posts:
needmorecoffee · 29/11/2007 19:37

yeah, I do all the cooking. DH thinks opening a can of soup is cordon bleu
