Vegan Flapjack - Butter Alternative?

SummaLuvin · 02/08/2021 19:18

I will be baking vegan flapjacks later this week, I already have a flapjack recipe I love but it uses butter, which is the best vegan alternative for flapjacks specifically? I'm happy to buy vegan spread, but wasn't sure if a sunflower oil would work just as well? I like flapjacks with a crunch around the edge, not all chewy and soft.

I used plant kitchen from marks and it turned out well. My mum enjoyed it and she’s v fussy.

Pure works well (though I like my flapjacks soft rather than crunchy).

BeastOfBODMAS · 02/08/2021 19:26

Pure or vitalite work.
I would avoid flora light as it seems to have a high water content.

If you do use oil please report how you get on! I was craving flapjack this weekend but had no spread in. Made this instead and it’s incredibly good rosemaryandporkbelly.co.uk/vegan-rhubarb-and-almond-cake/

Flora do blocks of "butter" in salted or unsalted that I find really good for baking.

Disfordarkchocolate · 02/08/2021 19:31

I use Pure margarine for baking.

SummaLuvin · 02/08/2021 19:31

Thanks, I wasn't sure if a sunflower/rapeseed oil would be good, high smoke point creating a crunchy texture was my logic. But butter has a fairly low smoke point and my recipe yield a crunchy result with that, so I might be over thinking. Will make sure to avoid flora whatever I choose, thank you.

I use Stork in a block (not the tub) for my dairy-free child. Works OK when baking.

tattychicken · 02/08/2021 19:35

Flora plant butter in the blocks

BeastOfBODMAS · 02/08/2021 19:43

Yes it’s Flora Light that makes flapjack smoothie, I haven’t tried the blocks yet!

dopeyduck · 02/08/2021 21:36

Flora plant butter (the blocks) are very good

Ostryga · 02/08/2021 21:39

Naturli is amaazing. Closest thing to proper butter and one of the few that doesn’t contain palm oil. The block is better than the spreadable.

Vitalite is crap for baking but better on sandwiches. Pure soya is fantastic for baking but crap on sandwiches

Thecurtainsofdestiny · 02/08/2021 21:54

Trex also works.

This with bells on! I can’t tell that I’m using a vegan substitute when I have Vitalite on toast etc - tastes great. But using Pure for that makes it taste vile. But it is fab for baking!
MarkRuffaloCrumble · 02/08/2021 22:01

I use the flora plant block in place of butter for baking and buttercream etc for vegans. It’s ideal. Any low fat spread will be bulked out with water so avoid that, but otherwise a regular non dairy margarine would be a fine substitute.

@BeastOfBODMAS - now I’m upset I put a load of rhubarb in the compost bin as I no room in the freezer.
That recipe looks delicious. I will make it when more rhubarb is ready to pull. Thanks.

BeastOfBODMAS · 02/08/2021 22:20

@GrrRightBackAtYou Ah you’re so lucky having your own rhubarb source! I am pregnant and even more obsessed with the stuff than normal. I cried actual tears of rage yesterday when I took that cake out the oven and it was too hot to eat Blush

Grin I’m sure it was worth the wait!
