I have guests coming to stay and am looking to put together a weeks worth of meals that are gluten free. I've got a couple of curries but would really appreciate any ideas. Needs to be fairly quick to get together and lots of kids are involved. Thank you!

Jacket potatoes & filling, gf pasta bake, lasagne, sausages & mash, jambalaya

youvemademyshitlist · 02/08/2021 09:22

Trying googling Becky Excell. Her blog has loads of recipes, mostly baking but there are plenty of meal options. Every recipe of hers I've tried has worked perfectly.

Just make what you normally make and substitute;

Rice, potatoes, vegetables ribbons or GF pasta for spaghetti / other pasta

Cornflour for flour in sauces

It’s not hard, unless all your usual meals are pastry or bread based. You can buy GF pizza bases if you like, or make your own with vegetables etc .

Mexican stuff is often gf, you can get good gf wraps and most hard tacos are gf.

Very good gf pasta these days, so a nice spag Bol can be done gf. Lasagne too.

Rice is gf, so paella, risotto etc good. Just check you use gf stock.

Do you know if contamination is a possible issue ( are your guests coeliac) ? If so , you need to use a separate bread board and utensils for prep and serving.

PigPatrol · 02/08/2021 09:35

Really helpful, thank you. Yes, one of the guests is coeliac so contamination is an issue

I would go for things naturally GF, much easier than dealing with alternatives that aren't always as good, typically expensive, and don't act the way you expect.

I would build meals around the following carbs - rice, rice noodles, corn tortillas/tortilla chips, potatoes, GF pasta (this often is good)

My favourite summer GF dessert is this. Super easy, prep in advance, and quick to serve, just miss the booze are you have kids. www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/passion_fruit_ice_cream_67878 I also love fridge set cheesecake, GF biscuits are easy to find so just substitute those in, I love this recipe www.waitrose.com/home/recipes/recipe_directory/m/mascarpone___lime_torte.html

Just something to be careful of - soy sauce is not GF, I almost made this mistake, GF alternatives are available, I think called tamari.

Dinners tend to be easy... it’s breakfast and lunch I struggle with as a non-coeliac Gluten intolerant, as I find the bread and bread type products generally sad and disappointing ...

Found some go-to things though-
GF granola with yogurt and black cherry compote
Omelettes
Scrambled eggs and salmon
Gluten free pitta tends to be passable with any sort of fillings, or toasted, left whole and topped with smashed avo etc
Not soup- just reminds me of the bread I’d rather be having
Salad Nicoise or green salad or watermelon and and halloumi salad

Dinners if you want something with heft-
Risotto with rocket salad (make sure stock is GF)
Curries/chilli/tagine with rice. Poppadums and tortilla chips usually GF.
Roast chicken with potatoes etc

Someone mentioned sausages - they aren't usually GF so be careful. However GF versions are usually really good.

Chilli with rice or corn nachos, Thai curries with rice and shepherd's pie are my go to for a GF family member.

We are a gluten free household

We have lasagne made with gluten free lasagne sheets. Most jars of white sauce are surprisingly gluten free,

We have shepherds/cottage pie (just sub any flour for thickening with cornflour or gluten free flour)

Chicken and chips (just make sure they are not ones with a wheat containing coating)

Pretty much any curry and rice

Jacket potatoes with whatever fillings

Roast beef with all the trimmings (Becky Excell recipe for gf Yorkshire puddings is foolproof)

Sausage and mash with gluten free gravy (Asda do good own brand gf granules if you don't make from scratch)

Salad/deli/ picky stuff with a potato salad or potato wedges

Spag Bol with gluten free spaghetti (barilla is the best)

Morrisons do good gluten free pizzas from the freezer

Wharburtons super soft gluten free square roles for sandwiches / burgers (a lot of normal supermarket sausages and burgers are gluten free)

Homemade skewers

Fish pie

Have you tried the Warburtons Super soft square rolls yet as a bread option?

Game changer

Just discovered these and DS & my MIL (both gluten intolerant) love them. Apart from that GF bread is pretty awful.

How about overnight oats with fruit for breakfast?

GF wraps or pita bread is good for lunch. Or baked potato? DS had hash browns and beans today.

Chilli & sweet potato wedges or curries with rice always go down well. Or a pasta bake assuming you check any sauces for wheat/gluten.

silentlight · 03/08/2021 19:35

Careful with oats, some gf people can’t tolerate them.

Nearly all the sausages in M&S are gf.

NuffSaidSam · 03/08/2021 19:45

The key thing is just to check the label and not get caught out. There are so many things where it might not be immediately obvious that it has gluten in e.g. soy sauce, stock cubes, chocolate, crisps, sausages, Ricr Krispies etc.

DrCoconut · 10/08/2021 22:06

Loaded wedges are brilliant. You can put on them what everyone likes, I do chilli. Curry and rice. Make naan bread with GF flour and plain yogurt. There are some good Chinese recipes online. GF spaghetti works well in chow mein type dishes if you find rice noodles a bit flimsy. Just cook it al dente and then throw it in. Bolognese. Morrison's do a GF pizza for 80p, it's quite nice too, better than the more expensive ones.
