Squash help needed!

Hi - I was given these two squash (gourds? Is there a difference?) today. They are not big - the green one is about the size of a tennis ball for reference.
What do I do with them? What’s the best way to cook them!? Any recipes? I’ve only used butternut squash before so these are new territory for me.
Thank you.

The top one is a pattypan, both are in the courgette family and can be used as you would courgette. Two suggestions.
Thinly slice and fry in a little butter/ olive oil until soft, add black pepper and a squeeze of lemon.
Cut into chunks, cook with sliced onions and a tin of tomatoes, eat hot as a veg side or cold as a salad. Cook on the hob or in the oven.

Thank you @Peckhampalace so they’re not a peel and roast like butternut? Interesting!

I often slice them (or cut into eigths etc) toss them in olive oil and roast with thinly sliced onions and garlic.

That sounds yummy @didireallysaythat thank you.

I know this is v late but just coming on to say both of these are popular in South Africa. The green one is a gem squash.

Personally, I love pattypans just lightly boiled and served with some butter and salt. My dad buys them for me whenever I go home and I eat them with practically every meal! (they are less watery than courgettes when boiled).

Gem squash are a bit more complicated because the outer skin can be incredibly hard and inedible, even when cooked. We generally used to have them cut in half with the seeds scooped out then boiled. We'd then have them served with bits of butter in the middle and you scoop all the flesh to create your own mash! Not very glam but was always delicious.

Use them as you would butternut squash.
I peel the gem ones.

Butternut squashes are not the tastiest of the squashes so it is worth trying different ones.
