Effect of freezing a sponge cake?

I’ve never frozen a cake but know that it can be done. I’m thinking of freezing a cake for my MIL’s birthday as I’ll be short of time, but it needs to be perfect as she’s a bit of a Paul Hollywood when it comes to baking! Does it make the sponge soggier? Dryer? Less airy?

I’ve done this before, only left it in maybe a week before I needed it.
Don’t remember it being any different.
Make sure it’s well wrapped and it should be fine.

I've done this when I have baked too much cake Grin they are still nice enough but I find them a bit dry. I probably wouldn't do it for a birthday cake.

I freeze sponge cakes regularly. Never had a problem. Chocolate fudg3 cake freezes especially well

I always freeze birthday cakes before decorating them. It means they're ready when you need them, easier to decorate and if you need to carve them into shape you don't destroy them.

It doesn't change it at all, just make sure you wrap it in cling film and a plastic bag.

DD had a lemon sponge cake as a wedding cake tier, I baked it well in advance and froze it, it was absolutely fine.

I've done this with Victoria sponge (was fine but maybe a tiny bit dry) and also the Nigeria buttermilk birthday cake - this was 100% fine and I would recommend.

Let them defrost before you ice.
