How do I make dumplings and can I put them into a slow cooker to cook on top of my casserole?

I don't usually make dumplings, but it's cold today and I'd like to put some on top of my beef in red wine casserole that I've got going atm in my slow cooker.

I'm fairly new to slow cookers. Is this possible? What do I do? Thanks!

Personally i would cook the stew in the slow cooker, then put the dumplings in and cook on whatever heat dumplings need in the oven for the last 20 mins.

But that is because i like my dumplings to be crispy on top, fluffy in the midddle, and soggy on the bottom!

Suet (vegetable is lighter) and self-raising flour, bit of salt and pepper and cold water.

I use 6 dessert spoons of suet and 12 of s-r flour (for me, DH, DS1 and DS2), mixed together with salt and pepper, then gradually add cold water whilst mixing, until it forms a solid ball.

there's generally a recipe for dumplings on the atora box

If you but them in the slow cooker, they'll go all soggy.

I strain all the gravy out of the slow cooker into a pan, then put that on the hob in a slow rolling simmer, and dumplings take 15 mins in that. Keep the stew solids in the slow cooker on low to keep warm, then re-combine when you serve.

Oh and I put mine in the slow cooker for about 40 minutes and turn them over half way through because I like mine soggy.

Now, can I have your beef in red wine recipe?

TinyGang · 27/11/2007 11:20

Ah! I never thought of that ! It's been years since I made a dumpling

I use the Atora recipe and throw some caraway seeds in the mix...yum

I cook dumplings in the oven so that the top goes crispy!

Thanks everyone!

Beef in red wine...hmm well, I've kind of adapted this from another recipe that was meant for lamb. I'm not sure how it's going to turn out yet.

Gently softened some chopped onion and garlic. Put into slow cooker. Brown the cubed steak (seal in flour first). Into the pot. Some sliced carrots. A chopped beef tomato and a tin of chopped tomatoes. A tin of butter beans (not sure how these'll go down with dc - we'll see!) A crumbled beef stock cube and a generous glug of red wine. I might need to thicken it later. If so a little cornflour mixed into water and stirred through.

Oh that sounds lovely. I was intending to do a made-up recipe beef in red wine for tomorrow's tea, so I shall give yours a go instead, thanks very much.
